I am considering mounting a red dot sight on my 5 1/2" SBH in 45 Colt. I will probably use a Ultra dot Pan AV or L/T. In keeping the revolver as "compact" as I can, what are my options as far as mounts? I am aware of Weigand mounts but, I was wondering if there are other alternatives?

JP makes a base that replaces the rear sight on Rugers for their JPoint sight. Not sure if that base will fit the others tho.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

In terms of micro holographic types, I have both the JP Jpoint sight and the Burris Fastfire III. I can confirm that the bases are not interchangeable.

The Jpoint mounts in the space occupied by the Ruger adjustable rear sight. It requires removal of the rear sight, a fairly simple task. Note the mount only suits Ruger models with adjustable rear sights.

The Burris mount uses the existing Ruger dovetail and is a little higher. It doesn't require removal of the rear sight.

I prefer the "always on" feature of the Jpoint to the switch arrangement of the Fastfire - others prefer the opposite way.

I am not sure what you mean by the dovetail. Any chance I can get some pictures?

I use the JPoint reflex sight on my revolvers. The mount is secure and very clean.

The same mount will work on Ruger Blackhawks, Super Blackhawks, and Redhawks. Any Ruger revolver with adjustable rear sights.

How well do those sights hold up to recoil? I would like to try one out.

I have been running a JPoint on a 10mm Glock for three years, and two years on this custom Ruger. I've had no issues and never had to re-zero the sight unless I changed ammunition.

Thanks! I contacted them a little while ago and am waiting to hear something back. I would like to try one out on some of my revolvers.

I have a J Point, Fast Fire III and a Ultra Dot mounted on my FA's. Each have their pro's and con's but all are great. I have my J Point mounted on my .475 its held up just fine and I too like the constant on feature. The Fast Fire III is on my .454 and the Ultra Dot on another .454 both have held up just fine. I like the size of the J Point and Fast Fire over the Ultra. If my eyes were as good as they used to be I wouldn't have any red dots but alas getting old is the pits.

By "dovetails" I am referring to the Ruger scope mounting points. The SRH has one above the cylinder and one on the barrel extension. The SBH 'Hunter' model has both on the barrel rib. They don't feature on the standard SBH.

Thanks for the explanation. I get it. Mine is a standard Blackhawk. Will the mount for the JPoint allow any other sight? I am not sure I want the sight always on.

If it can handle being mounted on your guns, then we'll definitely know it's durable.

After staring at that very fine looking revolver,I ordered the JPoint and mount.

I am glad to hear some positive reviews on the micro dot sights like the J point and Fast Fire. I am having Dad's S&W M29 reworked and reblued. I would like to install a sight like that on the gun for hunting deer and maybe even wild boar or other game along the East Coast.

Has anyone used the Leupold Delta Point sight? I was thinking of getting one with the 7.5 MOA triangle for the 44 magnum.

Thank you Greg for that excellent write up. I am somewhat drawn to the 7.5 MOA delta reticule. I believe I can sight the gun in so the group impacts near the apex of the triangle. I believe that the larger size would be easy to pick up yet with a quick mental adjustment put the point on the target.

You are welcome, Bigbore.

And thank you... I am glad the write-up helped you out. Let us know how your new Deltapoint works out for you.

Sincerely, Gregg

So how did the JPoint perform? I'm afraid my experiment with the SeeAll is not gonna last long. JPoint and Fastfire III have my attention.

PsTan,,,,I can not answer yet because I was sent the wrong mount. My JPoint is still on the bench.

I think I killed it. Not sure. Need to play with it some more. Have it on my .480 Bisley and I cannot adjust the elevation. I will contact the manufacturer and try to get a replacement.

I've had a Jpoint on my FA 97 45Colt for four years; same battery. I've had no malfunctions to date. The M97 is a little snappy on recoil, but nowhere near 480 levels. My only complaint is that the dot is a little too bright.
