I am thinking about getting some electronic muffs for handgun hunting. Right now I use ear plugs, but I'm afraid deer will see movement when I put them in. During anticipated peak times, I'm leaving them in and relying on sight to catch them because I can't hear a thing - probably a foolish move. Anyway, which brands have you folks had success with?

Thanks,

JeffD

I've used the Peltor amplified muffs for years during pistol matches. Great product!!

I did not however care for them while in the field. I found I was distracted by noises I wouldn't normally hear. If you already are suffering from degraded hearing they may work well for you.

Huuh !! I definately have hearing loss. I purchased a pair of electronic muffs from Cabelas this past winter for use during the Spring turkey season. They do magnify everything, which isn't necessarily bad, but I find that picking up the direction of the sound is a problem. Maybe I just ned to get used to them. I plan on using them during this coming deer season.

Timing is incredible with this topic as I have been wondering if a set of amplified muffs would be the ticket for Calling Coyotes. Particularily when Howling and getting a responce. However I would not like the fact that the ability to determine direction is diminshed (if it is).

Yep I say HUH alot myself.

I read on another thread about windnoise sometimes being a problem. Anyone have that same experience?

Thanks for the replies. My hearing is not great, but it's not too bad yet. I just don't want it to get worse. I see that Remington has a pair made by Radians and they look decent also.

Yeah Vance-- i've had that problem while hunting coyotes, but i still haven't come up with an efficient system yet-- tell u what tho-- i'm not gonna end up like some of my old hunting buddies, that can't hear anything anymore cause they shot too much without hearing protection-- especially with these short-barrelled muzzle-breaked rigs these days.

have a set of pro ears i use at the range, mostley for the kids so if they are about to do somethind i know they will hear me. when i get to use then i notice walking noise, grass crunching bullets ratteling as you pull them from the box and chamber them(those sounds that are overplayed on tv when you have the good guy hiding from the bad guy) wind, rain on the roof. it can be like trying to hear dinner conversation at a rock concert. any one wearing hearing aids will know what i mean. most of the time i wear something else as i am not sure the shut down fast enough to gun fire. far better then nothing. and if to distracting i can turn them off.

JeffD - Radians is the brand that I bought from Cabelas. As I said before, the jury is still out on the electronic muffs for me for hunting.

I have a digital game ear and it works well enough but determining the direction of a noise is impossible and like others have said there is a magnification of ambient noise that can be distracting. With that said there are some situations where it can be used with no negative impact while hunting and there are other situations where they just don't work very well.
