Hey fellas this has been a long time coming, but I finally secured a brand spanking new SBH. I'm having a hard time locating a suitable holster for hunting/trail looking for shoulder or chest carry under $100 if that's even possible? I also would like opinions on good loads for deer and bear. I m using open sights. I was looking at Barnes Vortex 200 grain copper stuff.

Thanks

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Congratulations on buying a 44 magnum, you have picked a winner! Usually the first piece of advice you will get is to do the "poor" mans trigger job to your new sixgun. That is, drop one leg off the main spring. Its too bad people keep saying this. There are two springs for a reason, dropping one off will lighten the trigger yes, but it will not make a bad trigger into a good trigger. If you want a good, crisp, repeatable trigger have a good gunsmith do it right, you won't regret it.
Becoming a good handgun shot starts with a quality trigger, that & practice will get you there.
Most any of the 240 gr. or bigger jacketed slugs have a good reputation on deer size game. Hornady XTP's are very popular. Bears come in two sizes, spring bear & fall bear & there can be a huge difference. A spring bear looks big because the hair is long but a 4 months nap will have him pretty trimmed down so the same bullet you used on your fall deer hunt will work. If its a fall bear then a bigger, tougher bullet usually works best. The Speer 270 gr. Gold Dot, the Barnes X bullets, etc. something on the bonded core side that holds together & gives great penetration. Many times bears don't bleed much, that long hair can plug holes pretty good. Breaking both front shoulders is a good idea if possible. I much prefer cast & I have taken bears with angling shots where a jacketed bullet might not get the job done but thats just me, others will chime in.
Check with Robb Leahy at Simply Rugged for a good shoulder rig.

As per your holster question,, this is the closest I know of to being under $100 leather shoulder rig.

I have had several blackhawks. One thing i have always done in put a new trigger and hammer sprIng in. It really changes the feel of the gun. Ruger are known to have poor triggers and I have always benefited from having a heavier faster hammer spring. It's like 50 dollars in parts and an hour of work if you do it yourself.

Hey thanks for the repiles, been hard finding what I want for a resonable price. Holsters are crazy expensive. Doubt I will be doing any trigger work this season. I m going to just go shoot and get it all figured out. If anyone else know of a holster let me know please. I was even wondering if good leather can be had slightly used ??

Thanks again

I have this one....

I know it might be a little over what you are looking to spend if you go with the chest rig but its really nice comfortable and rugged. I have one for my 4.2 inch ruger in Oxblood....

Its 70 for holster and 60 for chest rig... But the good thing is you can use holster as belt rig or chest rig....

Thanks Dave, that's the exact one I have been leaning towards. Looks like you can add the "chesty" straps at a later date no problem.

Uncle Mikes makes a decent shoulder holster for the money. Not sexy but will carry a gun for a long time. Lightweight too. Good luck with your .44 One of favorites. I have not bought a factory round for a .44 since I bought my first one 30 + years ago so can't offer a suggestion. I can give thumbs up on the 240 XTP bullet as I have used thousands of them. As far as cast bullets go the Montana Bullet company sells a 255 semi wadcutter with a gas check that work very well in .44. Very accurate and devastating on deer. I would suggest asking around the local gun club for someone to get you started in reloading. You might have to buy a set of dies if the reloader doesn't shoot that caliber but he will no doubt have all the tooling needed. I was 14 and had an 8mm Mauser as my first deer rifle and a friend of the family told me to get some dies and some bullets at the local gun shop and he would teach me what I needed to know. Been at it ever since!

210 grain JHP with 17.0 Grains Blue Dot. As stated deer don't need super heavy bullets to work well. Montana Bullets are worth the money if hard cast is your projectile of choice.

Hey thanks guys, I went with the Uncle Mikes holster to give it a whirl. Also picked up some 44 specials which shot fantastic. Going to use the Winchester White box 240 jsp if they will shoot decent for huntging. They are quite available around these parts

The Winchester White box 240 jsp will work fine for deer. I have used them to take four North Carolina whitetails out to 75 yards with my 5.5 inch Ruger Redhawk. Good luck this season.
