Anyone know what countries still allow handgun hunting?

OR for that matter where it is still safe to hunt abroad?

What may be possible today -- could very well change tomorrow. I would check with your outfitter in any potential hunting destination. In certain situations -- they may be able to get a permit for your particular firearm. It's a changing world and many third world countries see things differently than we do -- while some don't care if you're shooting a rocket launcher.

Ditto to what Mark said. Also note that some African countries that allow handgun hunting may still be restrictive as to the type/configuration of the handgun eg revolver vs Semi auto etc.

I hunted the Eastern Cape province of South Africa last year and my travel and overall trip went great. I felt safer there than I would without a firearm in Chicago or St. Louis. Probably safer than traveling to the EU or Mexico. Its the best per animal bargain there is for a hunt. I bagged 6 quality animals. The total cost for air travel, the hunt, lodging, tips etc was under $7k. About the price of a USA Elk hunt. (Taxidermy not included) That being said I would be very careful about any international travel these days although statistically it is far safer than attending a local college or high school.

May have to make sure you can get your trophies home if all the craziness with the airlines of refusing to ship hunter's trophy heads.

I just received my mounted trophies in August via South African Air to NYC. No problems. Do your homework and shop around. Do not let the media hype of a few airlines control your decision to hunt. I hunted with Kubusi Safaris - booked thru EAI Outdoors. They have their own, on staff taxidermist. They did great work.

I wasn't trying to be negative just seen a lot of bologna of some of the airlines siding with the ainti's trying make it tougher on hunters. I fly a fair amount each year and you can bet I will research the transportation policies of trophy heads by the airline I'm planning on booking a flight with.

Retiring in 4 years; unless I win the lottery before, and I am planning on treating myself to a African hunt. Was hoping my hunting buddy will go with me but I may have to travel alone. I would go now but my job it's hard to be gone for 2 weeks at a time. Just got to settle on who I want to book with. Decisions decisions

dvan, I wish you well in your trip planning. Handgun hunting South Africa is the greatest adventure I have ever experienced. If you can I strongly suggest attending an outfitters show and meet with outfitters. We have the NRA show in Harrisburg PA that I attend plus there are Safari Club International and Dallas Safari Club conventions. I booked through EAI Outdoors in Wisconsin. If I ever go back I will hunt with them again. I met Ed about 4 years before I went and I chose to book with him about 2 years before my trip. Planning it is part of the adventure!

Can I get a list of the outfitters that use rocket launchers? Do they provide them or must you bring your own? Some of the guys on this site come close with their monster hand cannons!

A guy I know shot a water buffalo in Vietnam with a RPG "just to break the boredom". He said all that was left was 4 feet in the mud and a big pink spot! I think it got reported as a training accident.

I go to the Iowa deer classic every year and I stop and visit with every south African outfitter that is there. Would like to visit with EAI Outfitters face to face. I won't travel that far unless I do.

I echo Billa's experience and suggestions. I also refer to the equivalent cost of a domestic hunt vs. what I paid for an RSA hunt. Excluding the taxidermhy, one can collect more animals and have *unique* trophies. Once we got the hell out of Johannesburg I felt completely safe as I also had a gun on me at all times out in the field and on the road between concessions.
