I know there is a thread similar to this but I didn't want to take away from Mech 8. My 460 barrel should be here in a week or so. It is a 15" integral break (15" overall) full bull mgm with 6 hole base. I already reload for the 460 40.0 from of 296 with a 300 xtp mag. I don't know if I want to shoot that heavy of a bullet out of the encore but if you think that is a good idea let me hear why. Also since it is a single shot do yall seat the bullets closer to the lands? Also do yall still put a good crimp on the bullet or just enough to take the bell out of the case mouth? Let me hear it I want to know everything about how those of you that shoot and load for the 460. Thanks and I'm very excited and I think this will be the ultimate gun for whatever I want to hunt

Mine is a sure enough thumper with 300gr XTPs--on both ends. Heavy crimp with no particular relevance to the lands, though I suppose you could seat it long. I seat to the groove.
I'll carry it with my SRH just in case Sasquatch shows.

Also do yall still put a good crimp on the bullet or just enough to take the bell out of the case mouth? I always crimp a straightwall case. A good consistant crimp does more than just keep the bullet from falling out, it aids in combustion by allowing some pressure to build up prior to the bullet leaving the case.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Here is the load I'm using in my .460 S&W barrel. Also made by MGM for my Encore pistol. Running the 250gr Hornady XTP at over 2,300 fps. I took two deer with it this past season. One around 90 yards and the other around 120 yards. Both dropped on the spot with excellent expansion and penetration.

Zee- is that bullet a xtp mag or just xtp? It's the standard XTP. While I found that I needed to slow it down in my .454 Casull revolvers, I've had absolutely zero issues running it in the Encore. My Casulls experienced shoddy accuracy and excessive copper fouling when pushing this bullet hard. My Encore has had none of these issues and no blow up upon impact with either deer. The Casulls like this bullet with 34gr H110. I attribute it to a forcing cone and cylinder gap. The Encore has a closed chamber.

Ok I like that grain of bullet I think it will be the best of both worlds. I'm going to pick some up at my local gun shop this weekend. Do they come in 50 rd or 100 rd box

The 250 grain XTP and 240 grain XTP-Mag come in boxes of 100. The 300 grain XTP and XTP-Mag come in boxes of 50.
I would normally recommend the 240 grain XTP-Mag over the 250 grain XTP since the Mag was designed for high pressure cartridges, but I Zee's experience with the regular XTP speaks for itself.

Were you after more than say a Texas Whitetail or hog, I would probably recommend the XTP Mags as well. I probably wouldn't try to drive the 250s at the velocity I'm getting through a large elk/moose/bear. Just for the shear bone size.
But, on deer/pigs, I think the Mags will actually blow through with less expansion than the 250s will. Being of the thicker jacket variety.

I run the 300gr XTP MAGS. I run my OAL long. I pulled back .002" from full chamber length, and crimped slightly. My barrel is also from MGM. 14" overall length with 1.5" brake. Love shooting that gun. If its inside 300 yards, I will be shooting.
I'm hunting tomorrow with it and Fezzik at one of my favorite stands. Love those two guns! One, if not both guns, should score on this trip. Saw 6 does as we drove through our gate. Started the evening hunt, and had elk everywhere.
