A lot of you here have custom revolvers already, but what would your choice be, give no financial restrictions? I really think mine would be to just have a few simple things done to one of the guns I already have, a 4 5/8" stainless steel SBH. I think I would get just the basics, action job, barrel crowned, forcing cone cut to 11 degrees, maybe the cylinder holes recut and different sights. I wouldn't do anything to the gun that has no effect on shooting, such as engraving, probably no porting either. What would you do?

My only reasoning for having a custom done would be to get something that isn't readily available on the open market. For example a 5 shot SA in 475 Linebaugh, 500 JRH, etc. I'm not a fan of chicken scratch on a gun either.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

It's all a matter of what you want. An action job is ALWAYS worth the expense. You'll be spoiled by it and it'll become mandatory. As are custom grips, fitted to both the sixgun and paws. Personally, I think custom sights are also mandatory, for the improved sight picture if nothing else. Crowns and forcing cones addressed on an individual basis. Barrel might have to be set back a thread or two for a new forcing cone. Have the same gun, converted it to a Bisley then sent it to Clements for spiffing up. My latest project is a 50th anniversary .44 flat-top converted to a Bisley .500JRH with a 4 5/8" octagon barrel. It will also be engraved just like this Open Top I had done in 2013 and similarly finished.

Hmm, let me think. A Freedom Arms 44 Magnum, maybe with a stainless scope mount and scope combination. I'd like something similar to KRal's: except I would want sapphire colored grips instead of emerald, and a 6 to 8" barrel.

I'd prolly have something along the lines of Max's JRH.... ....with a few other options.

I just did the "spare no expense" route when I had my 45 Colt built by Jack Huntington. It is my favorite caliber, and I wanted "everything I ever wanted" done on this one. I knew it would be with me till the day I die, so I went all out on it. That's when Fezzik was born.

I think if I ould go back in time, I would again get the same two customs I currently have. First is a .32 H&R mag. Sheephorn grips, octogan barrel, custom basepin, steel grip frame and ERH, custom hammer of a SBH thumbspur welded on to the original hammer. Only change I would make is to NOT use a qualite steel gripframe as it doesn't fit to the gun perfectly. Second is my OM .357 converted to .44 special with bisley hammer, octogan barrel, custom basepin, action job, walnut grips and EK #5 gripframe. I would do NOTHING different to this one.

Right now, I've got an anniversary model Ruger Flat Top .357 at Dave Clements' shop waiting to be converted into one of his Jeff Quinn specials. Here are the details of the Jeff Quinn Special conversion: Jeff Quinn Special: This conversion was made famous by Jeff Quinn of Gunblast.com. It has proven to be my most popular conversion. NM .357 Anniversary & OM Ruger .357 conversion to any cal. suited for .357 size frames listed above. Conversion utilizes a new custom factory tapered barrel made from Douglas stock finished @ 4 5/8" or 5 1/2", forcing cone cut to 11 degrees and fitted to minimum barrel/cyl. gap. Cyl. is linebored and rechambered. Custom made .110" wide partridge style fixed blade sight of proper height standard. Ejector hsg. is reattached with factory screw. Frame and hammer color casehardened. Balance of gun is polish blued. Mine will be a 5 1/2" 44 Special. It should look similar to the one Dave has posted on his site: Probably got another 9 months or so of waiting.
I want some Barranti leather and a KRal knife/Barranti sheath to complete the package.

Sounds like you've got a lot of waiting on you hands. 😜 I really like the Quinn Special. I have an OM Blackhawk 357 that may get the same treatment some day.

DH, if I'm not mistaken, that picture is Barranti's 44 as a matter of fact

However, if you have a favorite factory gun, there's a lot that can be done to make it a better shooter. While not a full custom, I had Jim Stroh perform nearly every service he offered on this 44 Bisley. I spent as much on this gun (and a two year wait) as I did on my first full custom. It shoots like a laser and I have as much confidence in it as I do any of my full custom and FA guns.

While I agree the custom aspect is very personal, from full blown to subtle tweaks, I have a 7.5 Bisley which will be getting a subtle overhaul, grips, front sight, action job, but beyond that it will remain stock as it is a shooter. As CraigC states, once you have grips fitted to your hands and a quality action job, it will become standard for all your guns. My custom was a pretty basic conversion, more along the lines of a sleeper. A 500 Linebaugh built by JRH Advanced Gunsmithing and I would not change a thing, it shoots as good as it looks. I will say many say the recoil of a particular cartridge is brutal, or unbearable. We all have are limits, but a proper fitting grip will make a world of difference with recoil impulse and control.
Simple, Elegant, but always Approachable

You say that you already have a 4 5/8" stainless SBH that you like. This is what I did with mine: Action job, Bowen Target rear sight, custom Gordon Logan front sight, Lett Ivory Micarta grips, polished pins, hammer, trigger, bead blasted balance of gun. The accuracy of the gun was already well established, and no accuracy work was required:

I'm scared to even consider a custom SA revolver.
I fear I would be screwed for life and want more.
