Whats the best way to get leading out of the barrel? scrubbed for a while, got most out but still some left.

Sam--l shoot lead most of the time and really don't worry about it.. lf it does bother you simply shoot a cyl full of jacketed rds.. No more lead.. Been doing it this way app 30+ yrs...Shooting lead for silh matches l clean maybe once a year... End of season..

Sam Lead in a barrei is a PIA. There are solvents that claim to help remove lead and a brass brush works if you are patient. Stay away from stainless steel brushes. Only brush one direction as in don't reverse with brush in the barrel. The best thing to do is don't get lead in the first place by using a bullet/powder combo that doesn't lead or use a Gas Check on the bullet for safety. There are other factors that contribute to leading that the guys on here can fill you in on. The size of the bullet in relation to the bore diameter, the hardness of the lead the lube,size of cylinder where the bullet comes out of it and no doubt other things I don't know about. If you light off a full charge of some 296 or H110 behind the lead bullet the flame will melt a little of the base of the bullet and the particles will cool in your forcing cone and barrel. The effect is cumulative until you have a hell of a mess. Go with a gas check bullet from a good caster to avoid these problems. If the leading is almost gone from cleaning a couple jacketed bullets will do the job as SW282 suggested. I personally won't tolerate leading and only use bullets that know won't do it. Most of the time I shoot jacketed bullets to avoid the aggravation. Just my opinion.

I've heard this recommendation, too. Heck, just one jacketed round was enough to clear out everything left behind by some Cowboy Action Shooting 45 Colt loads in my 460's barrel.

A few strands of "chore boy" or other similar copper scrubber wrapped around a bore brush does wonders I am told. I don't shoot naked bullets so can't speak from experience.

Ok so a gas check bullet wont lead the barrel? I'm basically out of bullets as it is and I would rather not start over with the reloading process but if switching fro PB to GC will fix the leading then it would be worth it.

A Lewis Lead Remover works, as will a piece of Chore Boy. I prefer shooting up to a cylinder full of jacketed bullets, because it's easier and faster. I've done it for 40 years with no complaints.

Get yourself some bronze wool [med] and wrap it around a brass brush. Cleans your barrel leading out pretty quick.

A gas check is not necessarily the be all, end all of leading. It will probably help, but your gun can still lead the bore even with a gas checked bullet.

I can tell you from personal experience, that if you follow this, you can shoot lead bullets all day long and still only require 2 patches to clean the bore, with zero, zip, nada, leading.

Good info here. A properly fit bullet to your gun won't lead unless pushed too hard for the alloy or poor lube. There's a lot of other factors, but it'll come with time and bullets down range. Pay close attention to your gun and search the web.

Lewis Lead Remover set is a good item to have. I had two sets..one for .44/.45..and the other for .357/.38/.9mm. Worked very well. A bit of hoppe's #9 after gets the rest.
