I am interested in comments on what is considered long range for a 41 magnum. Model 657 6" with Weaver 2X. I am confident and practice at 50 yards. I have a very accurate handload in a 250 gr WFNGC bullet at 1400 fps.

For hunting, or paper? Beyond 125 yards the drop gets to be something you really need to take into consideration, but as far as killing ability of the bullet/load combination there I don't think double that distance would be too far if you can place it where it needs to go. Elmer didn't think 600 was too far for the 44 ;-)

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Elmer shot at that distance on a wounded mule deer if I remember correctly and literally walked his shots in-Finished him off too.

Two things I consider is at what distance can you keep your shots in the kill zone from field shooting positions and is your impact velocity at that max distance going to allow your bullet to perform as it was designed (sufficient expansion and or penetration)?

Shooting IHMSA Big Bore silhouettes with a 44 or 41 magnum are pretty much the same. Both are extremely accurate..41 has a bit less recoil. l never cease to be entertained on the 200 meter rams by these fine cartridges. You see the ram begin to fall before the ''Whack'' of the bullet. My 657 and 629 both have red dot scopes...l have another 629 Light Hunter with a 2x Leupold and its accurate too. For field handling l prefer the Light Hunter with its barrel mounted 2x Leupold.

When they were available the most accurate 41 mag bullets in Silh were of 220 grains offered by Sierra Speer and Hornady...
l shoot a Saeco 220 gr cast bullet...They drop from my mold @225gr using wheel weights

282,

What is your standard load for the Saeco and Sierras?

There was a member who showed me his 100 yard target shot with, I believe, 265 gr. cast bullets that measured 3/4" for 3 shots from his freedom Arms model 83. The smallest 100 yard group, from a rest, that I ever made was with my FA`s m-83 and a 210gr. XTP handload. My longest kill, with that gun and load, was 125 yards...... photo of big boar taken with my S&W 657 and 210gr XTP...aoudad was 70 yard shot with 210 XTP handload....41magfan,
you have an accurate gun and load. Good luck...

My longest to date shot is 42 yards. Thank you guys for your responses. I also have a 10" contender that i will be mounting a 2.5x8 weaver. This is a hard kicker but very accurate
