Festus,

If you do a little searching here, you will find quite a few older threads on this topic. Been doing the 460's for about 15 years, but honestly think that the 45 Super is a better combination, for me. The only thing the 460 brings to the table over the 460 is slightly longer brass to keep the loads out of an unmodified gun, and a slightly larger throat (ahead of the chamber) to allow a little more flexibility with heavier bullets (>230).

If you are stuck with factory ammo, then there are probably a few more sources for Rowland ammo, over the Super. In the 1911, you can buy the Clark 460 Kit, or you can buy an exactly configured 45 ACP barrel (threaded and comped) which you can run supers. About the same cost, and both require the same gun mods, if pushing the super.

My conversions (Rowland and Supers in 1911 and a 625 Revolver) have not seen much real hunting time, as for big game I chase elk and mulies, but it has been carried some while hunting. The 1911 sure totes around a bit easier than a large revolver.

I have a 21SF converted and love it.

I have a 625 that has been re-chambered to 460R. Zero hunting experience with it however. It is a lot better way to go than using 45 Super brass heavy loaded. With a 460R you cannot get a heavy load in a 1911 or other semi-auto not "LONG CHAMBERED" for it.

I would do some thinking about bullets. With a 1911 platform you are limited on OAL. This makes lighter weight bullets look better at first glance, as you will have more powder capacity in the case. Then you have feeding to think about. That limits the bullet shape.
Myself I think I would resist the urge for speed, and go with a Hornady 230 XTP. With luck besides expanding to .65 Cal, you may get a broadside pass through on a behind the shoulder shot.
If you go lighter weight I would not go below a 200 grain XTP.
The XTP has a reputation for over-penetration for self defense. This over penetration should be about right for a deer load I would think.
