Greetings!

I am looking to do a little holiday reloading, and have a small stock pile of Nosler Partition HG 300grainers that I think would make for great wapiti loads in the 454 Casull. I am looking to load them with H110/WW296 and the only load data I have for that bullet is what I scribbled down out of one of the older Nosler books a few years ago.

Starting load: 24gr

Max load: 26gr

Looking at other 300gr 454 Casull load data, what I have written down above seems awfully light. Freedom Arms lists their 300gr bullet at starting at 28.5gr and MAX at 31.5gr for example. and the Swift A-Frame data I have is similar to the Freedom Arms data.

Anyone have anything else for the Nosler that looks different? If you want to PM me so you are not listing data over the net, that is cool with me too. I haven't been able to find any Nosler HG data online

Thanks for your help, and hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!

IMHO, the Nosler data is very conservative for some handguns. The data you are quoting is actually Nosler's maximum for a T/C Encore. I have used Gold Dot data for the Nosler 300 gr bullets without a problem in my Raging Bull 454 revolvers, provided that you go slow and work up. The Speer 300 gr Gold Dot data is very similar to what you are showing for the Freedom Arms bullet i.e. Start Charge 29.5 H-110 and Max load of 31.5 gr. H-110. WW Data shows 30.0 gr. of W-296 as Max for the 300 gr. Freedom Arms bullet. Hope this helps.

What gun(not caliber) are you shooting these in? FA, Ruger, Taurus?

Thanks Sawfish, I have also seen some data can be more conservative than others. In this case, it was so different that I thought I should tap some vast knowledge here to see what some others who load this bullet thought. I contacted Nosler also, curious to see what they say.

I wouldn't think there should be an issue working up slow to the FA data, and it appears you are having the same thoughts

Sub, I will be shooting it out of a Freedom Arms 83

Just know that all jacketed bullets are not created equal. The FA bullets have a very hard core and a thick jacket allowing higher pressures.

Some good advice given to me several years ago in a conversation on this very topic with Bob Baker was to use load data published by the bullet manufacturer.

Thanks for the replies fellas.

I am definitely aware it takes "heavier duty" bullets to be ran at full potential through the 454 Casull. The Nosler Partitions were designed to be run at magnum velocities and were factory loaded (the 260gr) by Winchester in the 454 Casull and 460 S&W, so no worries there.

Duke, thanks, But I do not have a Nosler #6 book. hoping that Nosler will get back to me soon with some info. It might have been the #6 book that I wrote the data down from, but was wondering about other possible data that may be out there because what I have is lighter than many of the others

If it will help, this is an excerpt from a Shooting Times article from 2011:

According to Nosler, a maximum load of 27.5 grains of W296 occupies 94 percent of the powder space when used with the 300-grain Partition-HG bullet

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Great bullet from the 454... Used it to take an Alaskan black bear and a pretty big bison....The top pic shows a recovered bullet from the bison along with a new one for comparing.....The handload was either 30.5 or 31.5grs of H-110, The bottom bullet was from 400+ hog... Good hunting...

If you have access to a chronograph I wouldn't worry too much about the charge weight but instead I would look at velocity. Probably best results(good bullet performance and lowest strain on gun and bullet) will be around 1600 to 1700fps regardless of which powder or amount thereof.

lts still possible to find Nosler HG Partitions around.lt just takes abit more time and MONEY..These bullets are still used In quite a few saboted loads for muzzle loaders... Usually found in packs of 10 in various sizes. 50cal 54cal 58cal..260gr or 300gr..They are pricey @$15-$25 per pack
