Friday afternoon, my son and I decided to try and get a long poke shot on video. I had a prime spot to attempt or endeavor. We chose a big hickory tree on a hill in the middle of some rolling pasture land. Our goal was to catch some deer coming out the wood line, before dark, to nibble on winter weeds.
As the sun set, our plan began to come together. Two does came out to our right at 280 yards away; game on! I'd planned to set up for a shot on anything 400 yards and in.
From where we were sitting I could see the deer, but couldn't shoot due to the crest of the hill. So, an adjustment was in order. I was planning a prone position from my pack and had to crawl about 20 yards to the crest of the hill so I could shoot.
After making the crawl and getting set up; I lazed the deer (268 yards), checked my DOPE, verified a "0" value wind, got a thumbs up from the camera man, verified legal shooting time (had four minutes left), dialed scope to 10x and settled in for the squeeze.
At the break of the trigger, I thought I notice some reaction but wasn't sure due to recoil and muzzle flash. A quick thumbs up from the camera man made me feel much better. I was expecting a DRT, but you know how them deer can be. She turned and went back into the pines where she came from.
After gathering our gear, a search for blood proved the contact and 20 yards into the pines revealed my target.

I was using my T/C Encore with the 270Win barrel installed. It's topped with a 3x12 Burris and wears a SSK Arrestor brake. I'm shooting a Hornady 130 SST over a stiff load of Varget for a muzzle velocity just shy of 2900 fps.

Entry was on right side, just in front of the diaphragm...

The shot was slightly quartering away and made mush of both lungs...

The exit was center of the opposite shoulder with a nice exit whole...

So far, this is my longest kill with the T/C and it's just as fun as shooting them at 10 yards!

If I can get the video edited down small enough, I'll try to get it posted to the members video forum.

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

Hey man, nice shot! Seriously, Kim, that is a looong poke. Looks like the bullet did it's job as well.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Unfortunately, few people realize this.

Excellent shooting! The bullet really performed well!

I'm really happy for you.

Yeah.....some won't get out of their bubble and give it a try. Instead, just condem those who don't do it their way. I like all handgun hunting

It's a factory T/C barrel with a SSK brake added.

Great shot, I just acquired a 270 Encore barrel, and haven't had a chance to soot it yet.
Looks like the SSK break works well. Ear muffs are probably not optional......

I've got a 270 chambered Encore barrel without a muzzlebrake, and I wouldn't dream of shooting it without hearing protection.

I don't shoot a 22lr without hearing protection.
