I haven't been on here for quite a while so maybe I missed something. But I just noticed on Captech international website (the old Jameson cartridge co.) They offer hard core .452 bullets and loaded 454 ammo with these in 260gr. That look surprisingly like the great old Freedom Arms bullets. Am I dreaming or is this the return of the great slugs?

348, Just looked at their web site and from what I`ve seen I would think there`s a good chance that their 260gr bullet will be similar to the original FA`s bullet....The pictured bullet is an early FA`s 260gr JFP I recovered from a Shiras moose. As you can see its tough....

Just talked with a Captech rep and he confirmed that they use the 260gr JFP from Freedom Arms in their 454 ammo....

I was intrested in these as I may buy a 454 soon. I believe they may be too tough for our scrawny deer. In my mind, 240 is too light, and a 300 too heavy as far as jacketed bullets go.I'm just an odd ball though...

FA sold the equipment to Jamison years ago for the slugs. Makes sense these would look like a FA bullet

Brenden,

Think of these as a premium hard cast lead bullet, with a jacket. No expansion, with a ton of penetration. I still have a large stash that I purchased directly from FA (you might want to check with them, still). I like these in my FA revolver, but really love them in my Casull 1885. In the rifle, I am seeing 2400 fps.

This might get me booted off the sight, but I love hard cast lead penetration, but I hate the lube and lead smoke that I typically get at the shot. No biggie for practice, but at the moment of truth, I prefer to see my shot, more clearly.

Haha. This is the main reason why I don't use hard cast. I'd like to buy some of those bullets if they would offer them for sale as a component, for my 45 Colt.

I understand completely, Craig. I shoot a lot of hard cast, but haven't killed a deer with them yet. I'm just of the mind set that if I'm shooting a jacketed bullet, I want some expansion. If I'm using hard cast, I want it to penetrate from here to next week. Like I said, I'm an odd ball.

The first time my buddy watched me shoot my 44 Special with cast, he thought I was shooting a black powder load. It is defiantly different when you touch off a lubed cast slug. I just ordered a bunch of coated bullets for my 41 magnum, so I'll see what they are like.

I realize they have fa bullet building equipment but they may not be using as hard of lead. They may give a little expansion. Then again they may not but when ya look at the impressive list of game taken with those 300's it just makes me want em.

Sounds like you need to check out Powder Coating. All the smoke and lube burning is done away with. Bullet performance and accuracy is good.

Powder coating does resolve the issue of mess and smoke, but the heat required to set the PC does soften the bullets a little. This is probably not a big deal for most applications but when you need a truly hard cast bullet for really tough game it may be something to consider.

Brenden,

If those bullets have the same hard core that the FA direct purchase bullet, then very likely it would perform like a hard cast. Namely, insane penetration. The elk that I shot with a 454 rifle with that bullet (2400 fps+/-) showed zero signs of expansion, looking at the exit, and the heart. I love this particular style of bullet, as an option. If captech brings back the 240 grain weight, I will be all over these. For my 45 Supers/Rowland.

Cherokee, yes have been following the coating trend as of late, keeping an eye on the advancements. What I am doing these days is shooting a lot of plated, as I do not cast. Plated are only a tiny bit more expensive than straight lead. But then I do not run these are magnum velocities for plinking/practice.

Whew, glad I found I did not get the boot............

Rod,
Freedom Arms still has boxes of 50 in the 260grain format that Jamison is using. They must have a bin full of them because when I was there last and bought a couple of boxes they had to run in back and put them together.

I watch gunbroker, and the FA 300s seem to fetch a pretty penny

I hope they offer the 300. Best jacketed bullet ever for the 454 (my guns at least). The 260 would shoot one hole groups at 50 off bags. Woo Hoo!

Not to switch from the original topic, but I have thought the Sierra 300 JFP looks a lot like the FA bullets, and according to their website, its the hardest bullet they make. Maybe it would perform like the 300 FA bullets did?

Nope. I get major expansion on that sierra at 1300 fps. Great bullet but not even remotely at the same hardest level as the fa bullet

How do ya think they would perform at a lower velocity, say 1100 fps or less?

based on the expansion which was gauged by the wound channels on bear and the exit wound when compared with a 44 mag solid lbt i would say you should still get some good expansion at 1100 fps. im gonna do some testing at various levels with different bullets as the weather clears.

the good news is that the sierra is easily on of the most accurate lower velocity bullets out of all my 454's.

With the 300gr Sierras I have ordered in the last 3 or so years, I get very little expansion, and they do remind me of the old FA 300gr bullets, they have a hard core and a fairly thick jacket. I missed a large jack rabbit 2 weeks ago, and drilled a 10" juniper, it just smeared the nose off a little bit, no expansion at around 40 yards, was a 2400 load, should have been in the mid 1400 fps range.
