My wonderful wife surprised me with a gift of a new, S&W 460XVR 8 3/8" X frame revolver. I need advice on a flat shooting load for deer sized game. Based on advice from a few others I am considering starting with H-110 and the Hornady 300 gr XTP. I would also like suggestions for a good scope mount for hunting.

I'll say. Does she have a sister???
Rod, too.

If s4s4u gets her sister I will settle for one of her friends. You are a lucky man! Great gun too!
I would go with the 240 XTP Mag for deer. Less recoil. Flatter trajectory. Adequate for deer. The 300 is excellent but I don't think it is necessary for PA. deer. Maybe large muleys or elk. I have been playing with the .454 Casull and this is the conclusion I have come to. For deer I don't feel the need for anything bigger than .44 Mag. but if you've got it . . . Flaunt it!

Thanks for the advice. I have taken quite a few deer with 240 XTPs in a 44 mag. Great bullet. Thanks.

I'd say use the scam bullets too. I took my first handgun deer with the 12" 460 S&W revolver from the Performance Center. Used those factory loads from Hornady back then just cause that's the only bullets they had on the shelf. I have since switched to handloading the 300gr XTP MAG's in my 460 for everything.
Those 240 scam bullets will do great on deer and rabid squirrels though! :-)

So, much to choose from! I'm thinking FA83 475 or S&W 500. Freedom 454 isn't out either. Hell! Bring them all. Ruger has been great to me and the family. The new addition added, will most likely, be used.😀
Thanks, Gregg! Look forward to another year, of hunting together.

I'm quite partial to the 240 grain XTP-Mag and H110.

At this point I will likely start off with H-110 powder and the 240XTP mag and 300XTP mag bullets. I want to be around 2000 - 2100fps for a flat shooting hunting round. Any suggestions for a mild 45 LC level load - in a 460 case - for plinking. I do not want to shoot "short" brass in the cylinder and require lead ring scrubbing.

Using the 240 grain and 47.5 grains of H110, I can get 2000 fps out of mine. Any suggestions for a mild 45 LC level load - in a 460 case - for plinking. I do not want to shoot "short" brass in the cylinder and require lead ring scrubbing. I've done a bit of load development using Unique. Need to get back to testing that, come to think of it. Like you, I don't like shooting the shorter rounds in mine if I can avoid it.

For plinking loads in a 460 Trail Boss is GREAT.. Speer #13 has some great reduced loads w/240/250gr loads in the 1700fps range. l prefer Horady's 225FTX for reduced loads. Max for them app 1600.. l only use 460 brass ln my 460PC 10 1/2''

Agree with sw282. I use Trail Boss with Berry's 250 gr. TCJ truncated cone, at about 1100 fps. It duplicates a 45 Colt; however, loaded in the 460 S&W brass doesn't present chamber cleaning issues that the shorter cartridge would. Be sure not to exceed 1250-1300 fps with the plated bullets in the 460. I was shooting clouds of lead from the muzzle.

I've been using the 200 gr. FTX for whitetail in MO. All have had a very rapid allergic reaction to them. Using 300 xtp mag for anything bigger.

I use the Barnes 200 gr. XPB bullets in mine. The Hornady 240 XTP is also a good choice.

Shot my first full house 460 loads today. Awesome gun. Tremendous noise / pressure / muzzle blast. Pleasant recoil. About like my Redhawk 44 mag with 240 XTPs but a softer recoil due to gun weight. Fun to shoot. I got 1950 fps with 46 grains of H-110 topped with a 240 XTP mag bullet. Fed 210 primer, Starline brass. Brass fell out, primers not flattened. Pleasant load. Time to load 50 and get back to the range.

I took the 460 with me to fishing camp a couple weekends ago for the traditional "woodpile" plinking outing. We shot 30 rounds or so at various objects- steel plates, wood blocks, water jugs, etc. Impact performance was very impressive. Definitely rifle like. Much more devastating than the 44 Magnum. I will probably play around with the open sights for another month or so and then mount a 2-6 Bushnell elite and get serious about tuning for accuracy. I will say that my first impression is quite positive. Its an amazing weapon!

Not saying or agreeing that it is the ultimate. But, the two deer I've taken with a .460 S&W didn't seem willing............or capable...........of much debate. The results were pretty definitive.

My point is that whitetail don't take a lot of killing and pretty much any revolver one is capable of accurately and consistently placing their shots with is going tip over a whitetail.

To say that any handgun platform is the "ultimate" deer gun is a stretch, IMO. I'd opine that my 6" Bisley in 45 Colt is the "ultimate" deer gun for MN whitetails and the way I prefer to hunt. It is relatively cheap to shoot and easy on the ears as well as the wrist. It can kill effectively as far out as I care to shoot a revolver at game. It is easily carried on the belt and quick to deploy. What's not to love ;-)

This is a matter of personal opinion,Killed a shitload of deer with the 460, X frame and the Encore, the round offers range and power, match the bullet to the game hunted!

This is my chief complaint about the .460 XVR (but can be applied really to any X-frame).

They are the ultimate deer gun! That's debateable ;-) Here is my 2 cents on the 460 in the X frame. I have been hunting only with handguns for 36 years and have killed dozens of whitetails with various 44 magnum revolvers (iron and scoped) plus quite a few with the Contender 358JDJ. From a ballistics perspective the 358 is a superior killer at any range but really separates itself out past 100 yards. That being said even after many offhand kills with the Contender I prefer the pointability of a big revolver in the thick woods. Even the X frame. What the X frame gives me with a 2-6 scope is a offhand hammer for quick close shots under 50 yards and the 200 yard flat shooting, " big hole" full penetration that I get from my 358 JDJ. For me its the best of both rolled into one. Perhaps no other gun can do that.
