Rabbits love haystacks; and when they move in it can become a nightmare especially considering the price of hay these days. They build nests and have babies and pee and poop in their own beds, literally. They make a mess.

I went out to the barn this afternoon to feed my horses and my dog jumped this big cottontail hiding under one of my trailers near the barn. He headed towards the backside of the barn, out of sight. I ran to the house and grabbed my Ruger Single Six out of the gunsafe, stuffed some CCI HP's in it, and went back to the other side of the barn where the hasenpfeffer was headed, or so I hoped.

Sure enough, there he sat, right outside the hay stall, and I made a 10 yard shot to the head-neck junction area.

Those kind of targets can be a lot of fun and good eating.

Great job

Sometimes it is entirely appropriate to kill a fly with a 12 pound sledgehammer!

Good shooting, Gregg.

How often do rabbits give you trouble? We've never had any problem with them in our hay barns.

Always. I kill one every month or so. I used to kill several a week but have them thinned out a bit now.

We also have lots of mice in our hay, but I put out D-Con in strategic places. FYI the D-Con has changed and we can no longer get the little blue-green pellets any more. It is now a "cube" that comes in a little plastic safety box that "only the mice can get to it."

For safety reasons of course.

Maybe your hay isn't "rabbit friendly."

When we go hunt the Durham Ranch in Wyoming we stop at the big bulk hay stacks and shoot the rabbits. I have killed 3 or 4 rabbits at a single haystack in 5 minutes several times.

What kind of hay do you store in there? We have bermudagrass fields, with a bit of fescue here and there.

Of course, I think a couple of our cats make their way back there occasionally, so that might be a factor.

Mountain timothy and orchard grass hay, and Wyoming grass hay.

Hell, I am not that "into hay." Does it matter? The fact is, the rabbits are there!

I have very healthy horses and they have served me very well in my outfitting and packing business.

Nah. My personal opinion is that a golf course is a waste of a perfectly good shooting range. Bermuda grows quite thick and lush even in the heat and humidity of our summers.

That is funny about the golf course being a waste...

Too bad the shooting ranges don't bring in near the income of golf couses to help further the shooting sports, esp. handgun hunting.

Just curious Chance, what does a (small) 50-70 pound bale of hay sell for in your part of the country?

We sell square bales for $4 and round bales for $25. The round bales are primarily fescue, though.
