This is going to be a common mans quick review of the CVA Scout II in 300blk, and a quick view of the Bushnell Elite 3500 2-6x32. The fit/finish of the gun and scope are both way better than the price point would indicate. If ya'll can bear with my terrible computer/photography skills, and some sideways photos that came from a cell phone, I'll try to make a decent contribution for those who are considering either item for purchase. ( I don't know how to re-size or turn the pics, sorry for the inconvenience) All shooting was done from a bench with sandbags, @ 100yds on the laser rangefinder. Weather for the day was around 65 degrees, and sunshine. Very light breeze if any.
We'll start with the scope. The glass is very crisp/clear, and the adjustments were very good, with positive clicks and tracking. The finish and quality of the scope is very much above what I expected for what it costs. The next 2 pictures, are thru the scope with the target at 100yds, 2x and 6x respectively.
I used factory Remington 120gr OTFB, factory Barnes 110gr Tac-TX, and some handloads with H110/110gr Barnes Tac-TX bullets for this impromptu review. All 3 ammo choices shot well enough in 3 different guys hands, to be accurate enough for deer hunting. The next pic is the 3 different ammo choices on the same target. Top group is the Remington 120, factory Barnes in the middle, and the handloads at the bottom. Keep in mind this is an informal review, and no mechanical rest was used, so ymmv.
This was my final group of the day, using the handloaded 110gr Tac-TX at 100yd.
I'm sure the flyer was my fault, but I suspect it's good enough for deer size game to 150-175yds.
Here are a couple of pics showing the Barnes 110gr Tac-TX that I was able to recover from the dirt in the field. Barnes says they will expand at as little as 1350fps, which should be well past my self imposed limit of less than 200yd.
For those who are interested, here is the view from the bench, to the target.
This is my first specialty pistol, so I wasn't sure exactly what to expect. I LIKE it!!!! With the 11" barrel on the 300blk, the gun itself is not much longer than my SBHH 44. Recoil from the 300blk is very mild compared to 44 hunting loads. The Scout II is very well built, locks up tight, and opens smooth as silk. The plastic furniture fits well, but feels cheap compared to the quality of the rest of the gun. I had to lightly sand a rough edge from the grip, to make it comfortable, but that was the only real flaw in manufacture. The barrel is threaded, but I will probably never use a suppressor with it. I personally chose the 300blk, because it reaches most of its potential in a shorter barrel, can be loaded using the same powder as my 44, and the recoil is very manageable for someone who has arthritis in his hands. The handloads, recoil similar to a mild 357 revolver, or a hot 38sp. The factory ammo, recoils even less. I am very pleased with this rig overall, and am looking forward to trying it out on some coyotes soon, and some deer next fall. I'm sure there are probably several details I missed in this helter skelter review, so if anybody has any questions, fire away. Thanks for letting me share, and God bless.
