The vast majority of you are to young to have seen this ammo for sale on your dealers shelves... The lubaloy coating on the Winchester bullet has long since worn off...PS I used the Winchester ammo to take my first boar.... This was ground breaking ammunition at the time and part of "your" handgun hunting heritage....

The Winchester ammunition and recovered 240gr LGC bullets which did a decent job of expansion on my first boar....

Thanks for posting, James.

that's pretty neat stuff right there. I'm just getting into handgun shooting (well, compared to most of you guys anyway). I like to see this stuff. Makes me appreciate the fact that I can go load cutting edge stuff right in my own basement. Thanks James

James.. That early Lubaloy Winch 44 ammo advertised a velocity of 1510fps. Don't know if it was true or not.. l first hunted with the early SuperVel 44 ammo... These were 180gr JHP. l helped our IHMSA match director chrono some on his new 0ehler P around 1979.. Five of the SuperVels averaged 1803fps from my S&W Mod29

sw282, Its ironic you mentioned your experience with the Super Vel 44 ammo as I just talked with Gary Reeder about how he used that ammo on his early handgun hunts. He said "when he shot things with the Super Vel they would die". That was some fast speed for 1979... I choose the Winchester ammo because it`s listed speed was a little faster then the Remington...

I used to shoot the Winchester Lubaloy 158 grain .357 ammunition in my Blackhawk. It was hot and leaded badly.

wheeler, I am familiar with the leading, but I had purchased a very early blue 44 Redhawk that has almost a glass smooth barrel and leading was not a problem with those Winchester 44`s....

I remember seeing those old boxes of ammo in the store but have never fired a round of it. I learned to reload long before I was big enough to shoot a .44!

Interesting bit of history there James. Maybe not everybody is aware that the 44 mag started life with these swaged lead gas checked bullets and it wasn?t until Ruger came out with his semi-auto carbine that the jacketed bullets were introduced. These first jacketed loads were even referred to as carbine ammo for a while.

Seems to me that the older ammo had a little more umph to it than the modern day factory loadings. I still know a place or two that probably has some of the yellow boxes, but they are way off the beaten path.
