Wednesday afternoon, my sister and I decided to make a short trip over to the local hunting store. As I was browsing the reloading supplies, one of the guys who works behind the gun counter called my name. I didn't immediately respond since there's a guy who works there that shares my name. However, he called me again and told me to come over. He said that the rest of the employees had been talking about me that morning because something had arrived that they knew I'd like. He picked up a black nylon Smith and Wesson carrying case from behind the counter and unzipped the end, then began to pull the revolver out. It seemed like it took forever for that barrel to completely emerge, but eventually that massive fish gill style muzzle brake came into view. As if I couldn't be thrown even more for a loop, I looked at the blue tag hanging from the trigger guard and saw the used box marked, $1000 written on the price line. I had to have it. I don't know if I ever mentioned it here, but after shooting the Encore, I began to contemplate sending my 460 to Smith and Wesson to upgrade it to a Performance Center version, if such a thing was possible. It was, as I discovered, but not for a price I was willing to pay. Here was my opportunity to own one. So, Friday afternoon, I walked back in the store with my 460 XVR and a Mossberg 835 shotgun. Long story short I negotiated a deal and walked out with a slightly used 14" S&W Model 460 Performance Center. Yesterday, I set up a target and chronograph to see what it could do. I only had three factory Hornady rounds and eight handloads, so I decided to just use what I had to get it sighted in initially at 25 yards. The chronograph gave the following results: 200 grain FTX Hornady factory load velocity - 2493 fps. 240 grain XTP-Mag and 47.5 grains H110 handload velocity - 2374 fps. With actual load development, I could probably break the 2400 fps barrier with the 240 grain XTP-Mag and possibly approach 2550 fps with a 200 grain bullet. The absolute best part about it, however, was that the recoil was noticeably less than my 8 3/8" Model 460. It was only marginally worse than my 300 Win Mag Encore, which I find easily manageable. This gun definitely puts the "performance" in S&W Performance Center.

That thing's a beast! And that brake is no joke. Good for you.

Sweet revolver. I've walked by them several times but never picked on up. I know if I do, I'll leave with it.
What is the balancing like with the 14"?

Wow, that's a whole lotta wheelgun. You'll have to get yourself a nice trailer.....er I mean holster for it ;-)
Rod, too.

What is the balancing like with the 14"? Well, I won't be shooting it one handed any time soon. Wow, that's a whole lotta wheelgun. You'll have to get yourself a nice trailer.....er I mean holster for it ;-) Honestly, I don't know how I'm going to carry it yet. It won't fit in my holster and it doesn't have sling studs.

All kidding aside, Pistol Packaging could fix you up with a nice bandolier holster if you like that kind of thing. I had one for my Contender before I decided to sling it and it worked quite well. They will do custom fitting if you send them some measurements and a tracing of the gun. Very reasonably priced as well.
Rod, too.

I'll figure out a way to get a sling on it one way or another. If that fails, I know where I can get a wheelbarrow.

Chance Go to ncstar.com and check under scabbards. They have a scabbard for the A.R. rifles that will work well for the 14 in. 460 and scope. I tried my 14 in Striker with scope and a 15 in Encore scoped and they fit well.Multiple cary options strapped to a pack or as a stand alone carry, single strap or backpack double strap. Plus it fits an A.R. if you have one $30.00 at the local candy store. They look big in the picture but are not bad when you get them in hand.I don't have one yet but will before hunting season.

Or a gun bearer..... Hm, you know, I think I ought to make my sister be my gun bearer. That way she can repay me for guiding her to shoot that massive buck I was after last season.

Congratulations! As for a sling, the 14"&12" models came with sling studs. A company YHM makes the adapter for them. The front rail adapter for it. MDL#YHM-9485S. If your going to go the sling route.

Beautiful gun TN ....l got my 460PC 10 1/2" USED too...Great gun and really fun to shoot. While speed and power are always King l tend to take a quieter road with mine...l prefer the midrange loads in Speers #14 Manual...One rule l set for my 460SW was 460 cases ONLY..I think these X Frames are the Best!

Heck yeah! Especially now that I've coaxed 2650 fps out of mine.
