I just got a contender in 30-30 with a ported 14 inch barrel with Williams sights. The serial number is 90308. It has a selector on the hammer that sides from side to side instead of flipping like the other contender I have. which is center fire all the way to the left or right?
Can anyone tell me what year it was made and anything else about it?

The serial number is 90308. That was manufactured in the first half of the year 1978.
Rod, too.

Great acquisition!
Can't tell you anything about it other than it's a beauty.

That should be the safety if it slides side to side. The rimfire centerfire has to be changed with a screwdriver in the face of the hammer .Nice looking pistol, try the 130 gr Speer h.p.shoots verrrrry well in mine!

Look at which pin is facing forward to tell if it is center or rim fire. I've been playing with 30-30 in a 14" contender for a little over a year now (probably close to 1000 hand loads down range). It is what got me into handgun hunting. I shoot 110gn bullets at 2500 fps (loads on the site database) I've got 300 rounds of 110gn vmax loaded for a p-dog hunt next weekend. They will shoot 2"groups at 220 yards with an 8x scope. For Things I want to eat, I use the Barnes tac-tx black tip designed for 300 blackout. It is designed to function at lower velocities. My effective range based on bulled performance is well beyond my current capabilities (~400 yards). I could easily load it lighter and knock things over with authority, but it handles fine without any porting or break so I haven't bothered. I would stay away from hornady brass, I only get 3-4 loads in it before the head starts to separate. I am switching to federal pull downs and ppc (or something similar, Eastern European) as they are the only things I can find online or in stores besides hornady. I've got a mix batch of brass I have shot the same load in for 5+ loading a and they are all going strong (I am just starting to see the lip of the rim fire firing pin hole on occasional primers, this and quick load suggest am at max load but the Speer reloading data suggest I could reach 2700 fps). I recently switched to a lee collet neck sizing die from regular neck of full sizing dies. No need for lube and performance is the same so far. Good luck and have fun!
