I put a 3rd ring on my .454 Raging Bull,It tweaked the one ring so burris sent me a new one,And a buddy suggested a 3rd.Looks pretty beefy now although I didn't like hacking on my mount with a file. Pic. of my 3 ring 454

Scott,

Looks awesome but wouldn't that extra ring have done more good "up front"?

FWIW
What I have been told is that there is a greater sheer force (correct term?) in the rear of the scope in handgun recoil than there is a rifle scope, hence the reason for putting the third ring in the back instead of the front.

After trashing a Burris and severely wounding a Leupold, I too put three rings on my Taurus RB 454. I used the Weigand 3 ring set. I mounted the extra ring in front just cuz that's where the cutouts are. I think it's going to be okay now. You'll to let me know how the 2 rings in the rear work. I don't think that either way is bad as long as everything is seated correctly.

XP and Scott,

It appears that you guys are right... I looked at SSK's site and all theirs are mounted with 2 in the rear...

Sorry 'bout that....

I can't wait to go shoot it.The way the cutout's are on the base, had to put it in the back but I've heard that before that on pistols all the recoil is on the rear off the scope.

On any of my handguns that I can, I mount 3 rings most of them are on the front because I like to use the weaver rings witch are somewhat wide and I can only get one on the rear and 2 on the front.

I have the two rings in front on a SSK TSOB mount. I emailed JD for his opinion, here is his response:

Technically it is stronger with two behind the turret--However if you have a Leupold or Bushnell 3200 it probably won't make any difference. The rear of the scope tries to bend upward in recoil. JD

I'll verify that fact as my .500 S&W broke the Burris mount at the rear mounting screw

It is a S&W Revolver. The Burris base cracked in half at the rear mounting screw. Burris gave me a new one, they told me if it broke again SORRY and they would give me my money back. Next it sheared the windage adjustment screw head in half at the rear ring. I have since replaced both nickel screws with blued screws. Waiting for the next disaster and I will go from there .
