I just got a pretty good deal on an Encore .270 15" SS fluted barrel with scope and hardware, which is the first .270 caliber I have ever owned in my 60 years of life. I am not a reloader so my question is aimed at best factory offerings for my new setup. I am a Barnes guy so want to look that way for sure (best gr. ?) but would appreciate all input. Thanks!

Any ammo will work in your pistol, just at a few hundred less fps than a long gun. Due to the reduction in speed I tend to shoot bullets on the lighter side from pistol length barrels. I have a 270 Win rifle and have always liked the 140ish weight bullets for deer. If I had a 15" pistol I might look at 120 - 130 grainers so I could keep the speed up for good terminal performance. Hodgdon has data for both rifle and pistol so you can get an idea of how much velocity loss the 15"er will suffer compared to a rifle.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

The hornady manual lists the 130gr bullets going 2700fps and the 140gr bullets going 2600fps out of a 15in encore.

I used a .270 browning rifle for years deer hunting. I shot and used several boxes of win super x 130gr factory loads. Shot good/worked good. Dont have to have "fancy".

Try 130 grain Remington Core-Lokts or Winchester Power Points if you're on a budget. Barnes loads factory rounds with the 130 grain TTSX if my memory is correct. You'll probably lose about 300 fps with the 15" barrel compared to a rifle, but I doubt any deer will notice the difference.

Barnes has 110gr ttsx for the 270. Hornady lists the 110gr bullet going 3000fps in a 15in encore and Barnes always out does hornady by a little speed wise so it's probably closer to 3100fps.

Thanks, guys. Just purchased some Barnes Vor-Tx 130 gr. I hope to provide a success story by early December!
