Would the Weaver 301 mount (mfg #48638) be adequate for mounting a reflex sight on the Lipey's Ruger SBH 454 Casull? This base would allow the use of a reflex sight that mounts to a picatinny or weaver style. http://www.weaveroptics.com/images/products/rings_bases/48601_00547.gifThanks!

I would think that it would work for something as light as a reflex (Burris Fast Fire, RMR, or similar).
Not sure if I would trust one of those to hold a scope on to a 454.

I used one before I got the Weigand no drill no tap unit and it held up fine. That said, I didn't run it nearly as hard as I did the Weigand unit.

I am not familiar with the mount you list but, have considered mounting an Ultra reflex on my Toklat with this Weigand mount? http://www.jackweigand.com/srh.htmlSteve

I use that mount on a .45 colt with an aimpoint and a .44 with a 2x scope and have had no trouble with either loosing zero. Makes the gun heavier than a drill and tap mount would.

Here's another option that I have recently begun testing that I like more than the Weaver mount. Also no drill, no tap and it is from Weigand. Here it is mounted on my custom .45 Colt Bisley and it has seen some really warm .45 Colt +P loads and all is well thus far.

Thanks for the replies. I'm in no hurry to mount a reflex sight (that could change at any time... )
Looks like there are a few options. Nice gun, Whitworth.

I had a series of very bad events with Weaver products and a heavy recoiling pistol. Enough so that their QC became involved and offered to send me the rings of my choice. I specified the ones I wanted and they sent me the wrong ones.
Insult to injury, nevertheless. I won't use them again.
My filter is broken.

Not to hijack the thread, but would you all trust the Weaver 301 to hold a scope or dot sight on a less intense caliber like the 357 or 41 magnum?

Roger, I've run the 301 on my .45 Colt for several years now using some 'stout' .45 Colt loads (think lower end .454) w/o a problem. I, too, have been trying out Weigand's new 'no drill', but don't have enough use time to comment as to its sturdiness.

Well, to be honest, I have some concerns for any of the mounts that only use the rear sight screw hole as the lone screw attaching the mount to the gun. I realize the newest Weigand mount may be the best no-drill/tap mount for the 454 Casull. However, it's just a bit more gawdy than my eye prefers.
I'm seriously considering doing a drill/tap mount. However, I really only want to mount a simple reflex sight such as the J-Point, Leupold Delta Point, etc., so don't think I need a full fledged mount like the T'SOB (looks cool) or similar. If I were mounting a scope, then I would certainly give a drill/tap mount some consideration.

Buttermilk, Gary Reeder is now building mounts to fit Rugers. It's a minimalist mount for the small reflex sights. May be just what you're looking for.

Unlike the J-Point and other similar small bases that utilize the one screw, this one has a bit more real estate for the optic to hang onto.

Whit, I think the "gawdy" mount he's referring to is the one like you have on you 454. The full length barreled one.

That one is specific to the new 6 1/2-inch .454 and .480 SBHs, but the one I posted a picture of before his comment clearly shows the smaller mount with the holographic sight that will work on any Ruger single-action.

I agree that it is more than a bit unsightly, but I don't think you can get a more stable base without drilling and tapping.

The "gawdy" mount I was referring to is the Weigand mount that extends to the end of the barrel specific to the Lypsey's 454/480 Rugers. An unsightly mess in my eyes, but probably the best no drill/tap sight for that model.
The smaller mounts posted by some that only utilize the rear sight screw hole are more pleasing to look at.
