Alright guys,
I have a Smith .357 mag. It's a joy to shoot! I would like to carry some cast loads in it in case I need them during deer season. It would not be my primary weapon, but a back up.
I have some 160 and 180 grain hard cast from Montana bullet works. Any load recommendations? I have H110, 2400, unique and power pistol.
I am looking for accuracy first. Any load that tops 1100 fps will work just fine.

That load right there will kill any white tail out there! I've taken a few muleys using a heavy charge of 2400 in 38 special brass & the Keith bullet, also used the same load on my lion, always worked for me, 50 years & counting although I like a bigger gun & bullet.

If a rifle or shotgun slug doesn't work will a .357 magnum pistol round? Some what of a misnomers to use "backup" in this context. Still, I suppose it's your gear and what you own so, have fun and good luck. Steve

Steve,
I suppose you are right. Back-up is not exactly what I meant. Let me expound on my original post. I intend to carry the .357 when I am rifle hunting or scoped pistol hunting (contender).
If a close shot presents itself, then I will try the revolver.

Few years back my LGS got a case of Federal 357 with their 180 grain cast load. I bought one box to try in my 4" GP100 and it loved them. I was able to buy the whole case at a very good price. I carry them in my GP100 for those close up shots.
I can't help with any load data since these will last me for a while. But you are on the right track with your bullet selection.

I tried some 180 gr. casts yeas ago. Was not impressed. But, I was very impressed with 158 gr. Sierra JHCs years ago. Took 4 heavy bodied 8 points over the years with my 6" Python from 40 to 65 yds. Two dropped. Other two ran 10 and 50 yds. Did a few with 158 gr. XTPs. Deer ran a little farther. They did not seem to expand as much.
