I am mainly a cast bullet shooter in my revolvers. Recently, I bought a box of Nosler JSP .429 for my Ruger SBH. I will be using them for whitetail deer. Have any of you guys used this bullet? What kind of performance did you get?

I used the 300 grainier years ago. It did well. If I remember correctly, it was a relatively soft bullet and expanded well

is it a partition bullet or their standard hollow point but on deer i don't think it matters. they're typically good bullets.

I agree wholeheartedly with this.

My intention is to use them on deer. By the way, they are 240 gr jacketed soft points. I have shot whitetail with hardcast and if you miss that shoulder even by one inch they can go along way. What results have you had with less than perfectly broadside shots?

Why is this statement made so frequently? Placement is still the most vital aspect of shots on game, irrespective of caliber. And what constitutes "hardcast?" Many tend to lump them in all together and there is WAY more variety of style/design/quality in cast bullets than with commercial jacketed bullets, so in light of that, they are not all equal - not even remotely. Not picking on you dhom, there just seems to be a lot of misperception with regards to cast bullets and a palpable division among handgun hunters as to what works and what doesn't.

Id use a wfn with biggest meplat possible esp in a hardcast in a 41 mag irrespective of weight. Personally for deer id use a barnes for max damage but it all comes down to placement and with a 41 i try and be a surgeon with placement. Well thenagain, with anything

Guys we can all agree THERE AIN'T NO MAGIC BULLET OUT THERE!Some work better than others but it is still a Precision game. WE have to put the shot exactly where it is supposed to go.A cast wants a wide meplat to work to its full potential.A jacketed bullet needs to expand to work to its full potential. But put a semi wadcutter or a semi expanded jacketed thru the heart or front half of the lungs and both will kill. Any game animal can go a long ways with a perfect hit before it runs out of oxygen and dies .I track or backtrack every animal I shoot even when I see them fall.Sometimes the ability to track is just as important as the ability to shoot. The Noslers have shot well from my guns but have not used them for hunting. They should work fine if placed properly. Have a good season! AGAIN, THERE AIN'T NO MAGIC BULLETS

The only thing I expect from the bullets I choose is that they do what they are designed to do and that means that I cannot accept them coming apart or in the case of a cast bullet that they deform significantly. The rest is up to me. I agree that there are good bullets and bad bullets. In the realm of solid-type bullets, the Punch is my number one choice, and the way they punch (so to speak) through heavy bone is pretty magical in my reality!

Whit,,,, I am not trying to start anything with the comment I made on hardcast bullets. I have used hardcast WFN almost exclusively since 1970 with good results. [hardcast to me is WFN with a BHN of 22 driven in the 1100 fps to 1300 fps range] Generally, the widest meplat for caliber. I would not argue bullet placement is key and I like to have two holes in what I shoot from almost any angle. [they work on deer size game up to elk no doubt] I do a fast autopsy on every kill and the bullet performance was what is to be expected. [2" hole straight through] The reason for my topic is because I haven't used Nosler jacketed softpoints ever and I know they are a different performer. I am trying to get a better idea of there limitations from experienced handgun hunters. I am not offended, I just thought I should qualify my post.

dhom, I wasn't picking on you. I have heard similar sentiments from a truckload of people with very limited hardcast experience (again, not directed at you) with regards to the terminal effectiveness of cast bullets versus expanding jacketed types, either unwilling to acknowledge the vast array of available qualities and designs, or they are simply and willfully ignorant and just lump all bullets without a shiny exterior together as "hardcast." I've seen it all too often. Your post merely triggered a response in me, and it wasn't directed at you.

Thanks for understanding!

I was just wondering the same thing as DHOM. I have some Nosler .451 bullets in 250 grain weight that I got for a 45 SBH I cound not warm up to. On the box they say Sporting Revolver Handgun
Tapered Copper Alloy Jacket
Well Defined Cannelure
Form Fitted Pure Lead Core

They look like a pretty good hunting bullet, but I never seem to read about anyone using them to hunt with. With a Tapered Jacket, and Pure Lead Core they are saying the right things for a jacketed hunting bullet. Just no reports on performance on game.

The nosler JHPs are great. The lead alloy is soft but very strong. It tends to act "gummy". Instead of breaking up they normally wad up in a ball and destroy everything in their path. I am fixing to load a bunch in .41 Mag. I wouldn't hesitate to use them on elk.

First projectile used when the ''gun'' was invented were stones l am told.. Then along comes LEAD.. Worked great for the next 500 years.. Has and does kill anything everything that walks..
Suddenly 40 years ago they stopped killing. Even after DB Wesson killed EVERYTHING in North America with his S&W 357 MAG in 1935.With lead bullets even...60 years prior to that the US Army asked for a bullet capable of penetrating a HORSE @ 100yds and killing an lndian on the other side...45 Colt is born in Colt Model P.. Pure LEAD bullet 250gr conical..Lead kills
just as good now as it ever did

Besides , l still have 4 boxes of 250gr Nosler HG Partition bullets.. They are just too pretty to shoot

Take a picture of them! Then load 'em up and go hunting.

I wish I had a stockpile of them for a 44.

I loaded up and shot about 20 of these last weekend from my 7 1/2" Bisley. I was shooting into clay and gypsum based soil, so not really a good "how will they do on game" test. Loaded over 300-MP, they went into 1.25" at 25 yards, they really expanded, and half of them shed the jacket while the core continued on. With one exception, the cores stayed in one piece, on one, the core clipped a rock, it held together, but it was strung out like a string. I feel these would be a perfectly good bullet to use on deer.

I loaded up the 240 JSP with the recommended Nosler loading info [22.8 gr/296 and WLP] and shot them out of a 7 1/2" SBH. They are performing well at just under 2" at fifty yards. I haven't chrono'ed them but I am guessing close at 1300 fps. Hopefully, I will be able to find a white tail willing to let me shoot it and a quick autopsy. After reading what you guys have experienced I feel confident they work.
