I slipped out to the road stand yesterday for a quick Sunday evening hunt. The wind was flat and temp in the lower 50s--picture perfect. We have quite a bit of private land and can legally hunt our timber access roads. The one caveat about a deer stand on the road is that you never know which member or when someone will drive through. That being said, my heart still still sank a little when I heard gravel popping at 4:55pm. Perfect time for the deer to start slipping.
It was an old friend and local game warden out doing his thing. I sent him a text making sure everything was ok and politely asking him what the *^#% was going on?! We've had a good bit of duck roosting (late shooting) in the past few years near us and they were just trying to get in a position for the bust. Completely understandable and no heartburn with that. He did say they'd sit it out until dark for me which was appreciated.
By 5:05 I had four deer in my food plot: two does and two fawns. As we often see, one mother had twins and the other didn't get bred last fall. Perfect management deer. She was close to 130 yards and posing for me broadside. A perfect sight picture, good trigger squeeze and blinding muzzle flash later and she was a second from dead. She ran about 20 steps, just enough to get to the other side of the road before jellied lungs stopped her.
The Barnes 120gr TTSX did its job well. A 110# doe doesn't quite push it's terminal limits but the exit wound was three fingers wide and the blood shock on the off side rib cage was phenomenal.
More testing needed and on larger deer. Preferably with big antlers.

Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Jalapeno backstrap poppers and grilled tenderloin for supper will sure put a hurtin' on you. I guess I owe this addiction to three things: my uncle who first introduced me to the Contender platform, Larry Weishuhn for being the first man I saw making hunting shows with a handgun and me spending the better part of two decades in law enforcement where it (albeit a .40 Glock) became an extension of me.
Lucky for me, the wife and daughters are going off to maw in laws and I get Thursday afternoon through Saturday night to spend doing more of the same. But I'll sure miss them.

lol You won't get any sympathy from me. I'll only nudge you on to three days of "more of the same".
Pass me a popper!

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

The 7-08 would be a very good choice. It should be a good compromise between power and recoil with a good selection of bullets.

Pass me a popper! Well I'm hunting with Neil dark and the shoulders will be off the smoker about two hours after that. I'm :30 south of Little Rock so you might want to get in the road. I figure you've got 5 hours to make it. Go Hogs.

Guess I'm too late, unless you've still got leftovers.
What happened to your Hogs? They had to quit in order for the Tigers to best 'em.

What happened to your Hogs? They had to quit in order for the Tigers to best 'em. Halftime reports have placed hookers and dealers in the locker room. I'm not confirming nor denying any implication of truth here but I've got to find something reasonable. Know what the difference between a dollar bill and the Razorbacks is? Four whole quarters....
