Came back from a cull hunt on Sunday. Great time. Took 3 deer with my 44Mag shooting 240 Gr modified XTP's. I opened up the hollow point to 1/8" and deepened the hole to 0.200" (originally .100 deep).
Reason for this was to get a little more expansion as the last 4 deer i shot experienced little expansion. They all died well. Within 20 yards, but i like the 44 to shake the deer, and this modified bullet (9 grains lighter) certainly did the trick.
Shot an old cull buck (160 lb dressed) twice. First at 76 yards broadside. Heard the smack and he ran at me and I shot him again quartering away at 62 yards. Second shot knocked him down and exited through jugular which made him bleed well on the last 15 yard run. First shot gave me a beautiful 210 grain mushroom from under opposite rib cage.
Awesome experience. The next day I shot a spoke and a doe, one at 46 yards the other at 65 yards. the modified rounds dropped them all but all but one got back up to run for cover. Longest run was 15 yards.
