Looking to get a TC ProHunter, at this time i,m only hunting the elusive Iowa whitetail, but I may venture west. They both look to be ballisticly equal, brass seems to be cheaper with the 500, but bullets seem to be cheaper for the 460....May run lead, may run jacketed. which would you get and why?
I will be getting a 44mag barrel first, so i'm purely lookig down the road..

I have a .460 because it was a good deal and an impulse buy. It shoots well, drops deer and has manageable recoil (though it split the forend in half 3 times before I finally cross bolted it). Bullet options are plentiful and it "can" shoot relatively flat by comparison.
But, I still want and will eventually have a .500 S&W as well. Just haven't found......"The One".

I don't think that you can go wrong with either honestly. I have a 500 S&W encore barrel on order from SSK now. I chose the 500, but the 460 is also an excellent choice.

While we're at it, you mentioned SSK, do you feel they are better than MGM? realize, I'm just getting into the TC stuff, I value the info i get here highly.

Honestly, at this point, I would order the MGM barrel if I could start over. I went with the SSK barrel only because I've had one in 50 AE..several months later, I think that I'd already have my barrel if I would have gone with MGM. Their quality is top notch too.

Between the two I would choose the 460. As it can be loaded to shoot flatter / faster. With lighter bullets the 460 can effectively shoot out to 250+ yards. From a practical point either will kill anything if properly loaded. From a pure coolness perspective - the 500 - bigger is better! I am currently hunting with an X frame 460 for the same reason.

I have a bunch of MGM barrels and have been exceptionally pleased with the results. There have been a few oopsies with them, but the company has always owned up to their mistakes and fixed the issues with fast, professional, and courteous service. Barrel turn around runs pretty consistently around 6 weeks.
I have no experience with SSK and can neither speak for or against them.

Oddly, i'm more successful at longer ranges, I can smack the 8"x10" gong at 300yrd 5 out of 6 rounds, the same as a 8" paper plate at 50yrds...this is my 3rd year hunting whitetail with a hand gun, struggle inside of 50 yrds, but have DRT's at 115, 147, and tonight at 176 wit a 44mag. but did cartwheel a red fox at 67 off a hay bail last night, wasn't pritty what so ever....Hyper expansion come to mind...

My TC .460 with Hornady 200 gr ammo is very accurate and manageable.

Less you are restricted by Iowa deer hunting law take a look at these two options. This assumes Encore - custom barrel manufacture and hand loading ect.
458 Winchester Mag: - Mine is a 14? with brake
Offers you a wide list of bullet choices in 458 caliber
Same goes for reloading dies\tools\brass ect
Load it light or heavy as needed
I find the recoil to be very manageable
Ballistics ? I?ve ran 300?s up to 2400fs yet this is not a max charge ? 350?s to 2350fs ? same not a max charge but this where recoil starts to be noticeable. For my deer load I run the 300?s @ 2250fs. I have not tried any other grain weight bullets.
500 B&M Alaskan ? 14? with brake
Uses the same .500 caliber bullet as the Smith & Wesson
Uses the 50 Alaskan case
Will match and likely exceed the S&W
Load it light or heavy as needed

Simply, the .500 is a 150 yd. gun, and the .460 is a 250 yd. gun. I took 5 deer with JD's .500 Encore before the public had it. Very impressive with power. At night on permits I shot one at 80 some yards. While I was cleaning it JD noticed another dead on 30 yds. behind it. A two-fer. That's serious power.

I shoot neither, but I would look at component/ammo cost and bullet availability and then look at max ranges and end up with the 460 based on max range.
The 458 is an interesting option too, but not allowed under Iowa regulations. 45-70 (is allowed) will get you nearly as far at the 460 with a large 0.458" bullet selection and lots of off the shelf factory ammo. If you handload or buy +p loads from Buffalo Bore or other manufacturers you can get even closer to the 460 in performance with a strong dependence on barrel length in the encore platform. I would put a break all of the options that have been discussed.
ps. what is a "long barrel modification" that they talk about in the regulations?

Yes i reload, so factory ammo is out.. They wont give us real answer as to what a "long barrel mod" is....imagine that will ya...

Interesting handgun rule? First they tell you it must be 357 or larger and a straight wall case, only then to call out what can be used by caliber.
The two choices you are looking at would serve you well ? So you are aware SSK?s version of the 45-70 Govt is setup to allow a full complement use of 458 bullets, per JD?s notes this will give you ~80% of the 458 Win Mag. I came very close in choosing this but opted for the Win.

The 460 is far more versatile. Can be handloaded like a 45 long colt, 454 Casull or full throttle 460. Choose your pleasure or pain.
Far more bullet weight options than the 500.
