I do most of my handgun hunting with a 44Mag and does what I need locally for Deer, Black Beasr & Hogs but I would like to round out my handguns with a 480. No, I will not be after the big 5 but Elk, Bison are on the list and maybe Buffalo in South America. I guess I view as others have expressed the 44 as the 30-06 of handgun rounds and the 480 as the 375 of rifle rounds. 1.I believe where I want to be with the 480 is a 390-410 gr. Cast at about 1100 fps, would that not do the trick for anything you would shoot? 2. I have been looking at the Ruger Bisley and the new BFR Bisley, which would you advise for accuracy, recoil, overall quality ? 3. In the way of recoil I know it will be a good bit more than my 44's, the SRH 44 is no big deal at all, my 4" 629 is more noticeable but still not too bad, I would think if a 480 is over double the recoil of my 629 then I may have 2nd thoughts. I want to attach a link of a guy shooting a 480 BFR, granted he is shooting hotter loads but seems exaggerated, maybe a limp hand, maybe not & it is is sharp contrast to a Ruger video I will add, yea they are selling their gun. Gentlemen, just trying to get an idea, the only way I can try one in my area is to order one. http://www.gunblast.com/BFR-50Beowulf.htmhttp://www.ruger.com/products/newModelSuperBlackhawkBisley/models.htmlThanks
You will not make peace with the Bluecoats, you are free to go.

In regards to the videos above, no they dont recoil like that if shot properly. I dont get that recoil with full bore 454's. My son has a very nice ruger bisley in 480 and i have had the 475 bfr. We have the 500jrh and 454 bfr as well as a 460 bfr on top of a plethora of 454's and other from ruger to fa's and sw guns. His ruger bisley is nice but id put the bfr at the top just below the freedom arms but they do have some distinct advantages like having all 5 cylinders able to be loaded and a free wheeling cylinder. Accurate as hell as well. The big thing is the ruger is a dedicated 480 ruger. The bfr is a 475 that can shoot 480 ruger as well. This can be an advantage or not depending on your view. I personally only sold the bfr 475 bc i pretty much just use 454's now. Like em better. I love my srh 480. The load you speak of is mild recoiling and significantly less stingy than a 629 with full bore 44's but more than a bisley or bfr with full bore 44's. If u handle the 44 629 These guns in 480 will be a pleasure. If ur loading your own then the 475 to me is preferrable and i would call jim tertin at mri and order the bfr direct with the bisley grip and and ad a dedicated 480 cylinder. The bfr is beefy and the strongest gun going and comes with a scope mount if ya want one. Thats what id do

I would add that the .480 Ruger Bisley is an excellent package. Much better in my estimation than the .454 version as it won't beat itself up nearly as badly as the .454. It's a fairly mild round even at 48,000 psi. The BFR, being beefier and thereby heavier will tame recoil even more, but even then the .480 isn't a huge departure from full-tilt heavy .44 Mag loads. Don't kid yourself into thinking the .480 doesn't kick, as it does, it's just not sharp and more of a push with heavy bullets. Either platform would be a great choice for the animals you plan on hunting. I took my water buffalo in Argentina with a .480 and it worked well. .480 Bisley......

nah, just not in the mood for such trivialities. that said, it's easy to tell who still lives in their parents basement and likely still plays nintendo instead of dating girls.
at some point you may look in the mirror and ask yourself why you're such a pent up reject that comments on spelling and sentence grammar on an internet forum about guns. it's about guns not english class.
any chance you go hunting or do ya sit around and wonder why burris choice to spell their name with two r's?
don't back off now. let's hear why you're so petty as to go into grammar. do tell, einstein.

Wow, seriously thank you and Whitworth for the info. I did think the video looked a little extreme, you answered that. I did take notice the positive comments you both made about the BFR.
Oops, now I see Lipsey has a 4 5/8" Bisley, this makes the decision tougher.
Thanks Gentlemen !

The shorter barreled .480s aren't available yet. I'll get one when they actually start producing them.

nomo, Using a 480 handload ,in this 475, I was able to make a 50yd shot on this boar. The load had a 325gr Speer JFP over 27.0grs of 296 which was not bad to shoot... Just trying to show what you may expect from the 480. I like the Ruger Bisley grip and it helps with any of the heavy loads....

nomo -- the regular bisley is a short lil gun and i think you'd like it and should be easier to shoot than the shorty that just came out. i just went and had my daughter shoot my son's 44 mag with him which is a sw44 mag with the standard winchester 24 loads and then the handloaded 425 gr hardcast at 1050 fps out of his 480 bisley. she definitely preferred the push of the 480 and felt it to be more comfortable. you will like that gun.

I like that you can really step on the gas with the BFR if you so choose. That said, the Bisley is a slick package. They will both serve you well. It would be good if you could handle both before making your decision.

I have no idea where I could do that within a 5 hour drive unless they have another one of those seminars in MS.

The 480 is probably one of the most underrated handgun calibers. It will almost run right up there with the 475 and doesn't bark quite as much as a 454. It will work on anything on 4 of the 5 continents and most of what walks on the 5th.
If I had to standardize on a single revolver caliber for all duties, I think the 480 will get the nod.
If you are used to the 44mag, the 480 will be no problem.

nah, just not in the mood for such trivialities. that said, it's easy to tell who still lives in their parents basement and likely still plays nintendo instead of dating girls.
at some point you may look in the mirror and ask yourself why you're such a pent up reject that comments on spelling and sentence grammar on an internet forum about guns. it's about guns not english class.
any chance you go hunting or do ya sit around and wonder why burris choice to spell their name with two r's?
don't back off now. let's hear why you're so petty as to go into grammar. do tell, einstein. It's chose not to, not choice not to. Bad grammar makes me think the user is stupid. no kiddin you just proved my point. you need to loosener yourself up. i guess if ya think that makes someone stupid lets just compare lives and see who is actually stupider than the uther. when you shoot anything let us know. when you have or have had either of the above guns then enter this thread. otherwise you just make my point and you can just go finish your legend of zelda video game. Hmmmmm, somebody knows about video games, you must be the player, not me.

The funny part of this, to me, is that tradmark is one of the most educated people on this forum. I guess the fact that he's pecking away on his phone while working at a hospital is lost on some folks, who need to get a life.
On topic, the recoil demonstrated in the Gunblast video is heavily exaggerated. Jeff Quinn's shooting form looks fine until he presses the trigger. His support hand does nothing productive and the sixgun is hitting the friggin' brim of his hat. It's hitting his hate because his elbows are locked in a bent position, they don't give any at the shot. All the recoil is absorbed in his wrists and it's wrenching them back. It's really painful to watch. I've shot everything from heavy .44Mag and .45Colt to .454Casull, .480Ruger and a handful of .500's and they have NEVER knocked my hat off. Because I let my elbows bend to absorb the recoil.

yessir, i always thought those videos would run people away from a great cartridge. my son is 165lbs and gets about 6" of muzzle rise. i also didn't use my daughter as a condescending example. she's a hunter and regularly hunts with a 44 mag SW.
