I want to start the planning stages of a bear hunt, most likely black bear and would like to see some member's pictures of bear taken with their handgun. Black or grizzly, and what it was taken with if you don't mind.

Took this Cinnamon phase black bear back in about 1998 with my Bullberry 6.5/284 at about 120 yds in central Idaho using a 120 gr. Ballastic Tip. The shot was a little difficult because I was caught out in the open & had to sit down in a shale slide & the rock kept shifting under my weight so it was hard to get steady. This was only a 2 1/2 year old bear but I was out of time.

This is my biggest handgunned bear (6 1/2 footer) taken with my 10 1/2" 44 magnum at about 65 yds. using a Keith 250 gr. cast slug & 22 grs. of 2400 about 5 years ago.

Same bear about 20 minutes before I crossed the canyon & shot him.

A very large black bear one of my son's took about a week later with the rifle in the same area.

This is the bear my son took, one of the largest black bears you will ever see, it's a 7 1/2 footer that will rival some Grizzlies! This is a spring bear & my gunsmith son weighs close to 300 lbs. Look at the size of the front legs on this beast! My 4 son's & I have taken 25 bears all spot & stalk, nothing comes close to this one. I'm looking for another photo of a big black bear I took about 20 years ago with my OM 44 flat top but so far have been unable to find it.

Nice bear your son shot. May be hard to convince some people that it is not a grizzly.

I don't remember the skull measurements but it was a B&C bear. We had a hard time just rolling over. I spotted 4 different bears in that same meadow that day.
One of the grandson's killed a beautiful blonde phase bear 1/2 mile from there & I passed on a blonde one once because it was kind of small & was traveling with a bigger chocolate phase bear. I could have killed the blonde one with my Harton 480.
Here's my wife & I & our 4 son's on an Idaho spring bear hunt about 4 years ago. The boys love it when mom's along to do the cooking.

This is another large bear my son took when he was 12 years old, not as big as the B&C bear but still a real beast. I had been filming Bighorn sheep & this bear walked right up to us. Spooked the horses!

A beautiful strawberry blonde phase bear taken by one of the grandson's 3 years ago.

A big black bear taken by one of my son's.

Another one of my son's with a large black bear, this one was taken at close range after he was making a stalk on another bear.

My youngest son with a very nice bear. Three of us are tied with 6 bears each.

Still looking for the big black one I shot 30 or so years ago with the OM 44 flat top, might be on an old slide.
Nice bear from one of the boys

Here is this years black bear, my first with a handgun. Not the biggest bear in the woods, but I took him spot and stalk at about 125 yds. The barrel I used on my Contender was a 30-30AI with a 150 gr. 30-30 Barnes.

My first Georgia bear, taken with a TC 35 Rem at 117 yards. The rug hangs on my wall and is my most prized trophy.

A 200 pound public land Georgia bear with my 35 and 200 grain Federal loads. The mile long drag made this one deeply satisfying.

Cottonstalk and I with my first black bear.

This is one that a buddy of ours shot last year (with a lever action). The bear was recovered the following day (they lose water weight). The official weight is below -- gotta love North Carolina!

I hope cottonstalk weighs in here as he has more black bear hunting experience than anyone I know as a proud North Carolina houndsman.

Yes we get some big ones up here but I think my home state of Penna. grows them just a little bigger.
