Took a nice boar this week. About an 80 yard shot. It was a bang-flop event.

Shooting the 200 grain Hornady FTX over a stout load of Re-7. First experience with this bullet. Full penetration. Lung shot and he didn't even take a step. I am pleased!

Anybody else shoot this caliber? Would you be willing to share load data?

Congrat's. The 358 is quite a hammer.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Congrats on your boar. The 358 JDJ was my first wildcat I bought from SSK back in the late 70s. Good luck with yours -- you've already got a good start.

Mark,

Any favored loads? I'd like any input there as it is a wildcat and real world experience with it and its loads would be helpful.
(feel free to PM me if that's more appropriate)

S.G.

S.G. Back in the day -- I used loading data from SSK. Took it on my first African safari back in 1983. Heck, I can't even remember what bullet I was shooting -- Speer perhaps. I liked the round a lot but moved up to the 375 JDJ and never looked back. For most of the game you will hunt in the lower 48, the 358 JDJ will work just fine. I believe Starline is making 444 Marlin brass now so that will be an asset as well. Good luck!

I have a 358 JDJ but haven't spent too much time working with it since I have so many other projects, but I have developed two loads so far. The first uses a Hornady 200 grain RN seated to the cannelure, 51.5 grains of AA2520, and a CCI BR2 primer. This load runs 1975 fps from my 14 inch SSK barrel that has an Arrestor brake built in, so actual length of barrel is about 12 1/2 inches. The second load uses a Hornady 200 grain spire point seated .035 inch off of the lands, 55.0 grains AA2520, and a CCI BR2 primer. This load is running 2200 fps. I haven't taken any game with these loads yet, but did expansion test them and found them to perform well.

Congratulations! Successful pig hunts are a blast. Esp with a short barrel.

30 gr of RE-7 and a 180 gr Speer F.P.works well in my 358 jdj.

Nice hog. Congratulations. I have hunted with a Contender in 358JDJ for 35 years. It is an awesome gun for me. For Deer sized game I like the Speer 220 grain flat point over 47 grains of H4895 powder. For bigger game I use the Hornady 250 grain spire point over 46 grains of H4895. This gives me a hammer load out to 200+ yards. With H4895 you can dial back to 40 grains or so for a lower recoil load and still have plenty of power for deer sized game out to 125-150 yards. Check out my other posts to see more of my experiences with the 358 JDJ. I have always gotten full penetration. Even on a 600 lb Kudu.
