Back in the 80's I tried the heavy SSK bullet and in my melt it came out at 280-286gr.. the difference being some where cast with a cup point of soft metal. I had 3 .41s a 57 with an 8 3/8 " and a 10 " TC
and a 6' DWA--
with JD's load the bullet went 1304 fps to 1360 -- depending on the charge in the 8 3/8 1205 in the DWA, with 1440 in the TC
accuracy was good in both --open sights and the S&W 3" (good for me) at 50 yards and the same in the scoped DWA at 100 yards
I did'nt like to shoot it in the TC but did hunt Deer with it..
took some Tn deer the solid always was through and through--the hp version did expand on a chest on shot and stopped in the hip near the anus
tried it on some wet pack 20" or so and always through and through no surprise
the .41 remains at the the beginning of the big bore or the end of the big bores--still was fun -- and the .41 is normally plenty for me

glynn, I`ve never cast my own bullets but many years ago I picked up some of JD`s bullets at the Harrisburg sport show from Penn Bullets. They were marked .44- 320 gr.- DCG/SSK. Can`t remember the powder charge but from my 7 1/2" Redhawk and 4X leupold they gave 3"-4" groups at 100. His bullets were the first heavy for caliber ever made... They were and still are a fine heavy cast bullet regardless of caliber...

I remember that bullet. I believe JDJ recommended a heavy charge of 680.

I do not remember the 680 load -- he gave a charge that could be used of 296/h110-- it was good
