Looking at the Glock 20, but haven't convinced myself I want to go with Glock. Might prefer a 1911 since that's what I'm used to carrying. I Haven't written glock off, but haven't fully decided on one either. I like the idea of 15 + 1 of 10mm while hunting in bear country, but other than that, I'm okay with two mags of personal defense ammo and a 1911. I don't want long slides cause it will be used for CC as well as open carry. Don't want compacts or sub compacts because I want the full benefit of the barrel length. Otherwise, I'd just go with a 40 and not waste the potential of the 10mm.

What would you do??

I went longslide. I figured I'd give the 10mm every chance to be all it could be. Otherwise, I'd carry a .40 S&W.

1911 platform= Mercedes Benz,Glock=Ford Pinto, lots of stock 10mm"s out there, I also went with a Long slide, mine is for hunting,Hiking, with a Alaskan chest rig.

I've been very pleased with a Kimber Target II 10mm for a couple of years and about 1400 rounds. Like most Kimbers, the extractor needed some tuning when it was new, but it's been very reliable since then. I did replace the barrel bushing with an EGW custom bushing and it's not too far behind my Nighthawk longslide 10mm in the accuracy department. There are other good 10mm 1911s out there, but for the money Kimber serves me well.

Sorry Seminole, but I will NEVER own a Kimber again. Owned 2 of them, and there is no way on God's green earth I would put my life on the line with either one of them. Worked and worked on them, and could NOT get them to quit failing. Every fail in the book happened multiple times on each gun. Couldn't get 100 rounds without a failure. The name "Kimber" makes me shudder every time I hear it.

I admit, I did contemplate the Glock 40 (long slide) for a bit, but decided against it pretty quickly when I knew I would be using this gun for CC and open carry. The open carry is easy. But trying to CC a long slide doesn't work to well for me.

Racksmasher, what makes you say the Glock is the ford pinto compared to the 1911? I wouldn't put it that far behind in accuracy, or dependability, and those are what really matter. Now if you are talking about aesthetics, then yeah, there is NO WAY anyone will ever convince me that a Glock looks good. They don't. They just, don't.

Been looking at some 1911 stainless 10mm handguns today. Colt Delta Elite seems to be everywhere. The the Remington shows up now and then. Dan Wesson and Sig show up here and there. You guys ever shoot any of these in the 10mm platform? I know it's a long shot, but thought I'd ask.

I was spoiled by my Springfield TRP in 45ACP. I'm about to just go back to it, and call it good. That gun was FLAWLESS.

I had a Blue Colt Delta back around 92 kept it a year or so. Sold it to pay college tuition.

It is the next gun on my list once I get a Colt Competition in 9mm.

I'll throw you a screwball and you can swing or watch it pass; I just bought a Glock 21SF for the same purposes but I'll shoot .45 Supers out of it with an aftermarket barrel.

I've got a thing for .45 caliber handguns and a 230 grain projectile traveling around 1100-1200 fps trips my trigger. Pun intended.

Had a Kimber with FTF issues, beautiful gun. Also had a Colt 70 that sounded like a spinner bait rattling but functioned flawlessly. Carried Glocks daily for 19 years as my primary defense/offense weapon and never had a FTF (with the exception of some Remington ball ammo) or issues with accuracy.

Ford Pinto? More like a Toyota Tacoma; not incredibly pretty but dependable as hell.

Zero experience with center fire semi auto until helping a friend set up a g40 as a hunting rig. With an 6.5" aftermarket barrel, compensator and red dot, you can ring 100-175 yard 12" steel all day off a bench with moderate/cheap priced ammo, but I HATE the trigger. (Blame my contender for turning me into a trigger snob). Imho, the trigger turns a potential 100yard hunting pistol into a 50 yard rig, but only if you commit to a lot of practice. Functionally it works great and I could easily see one pistol for CC and an aftermarket long barrel for hunting, but I would look for a different platform.

I'm glad I asked you guys about this. Lot of stuff to think about that I hadn't thought of before hand.

Funny you guys mentioned those last two. The sig intrigues me, but the Delta Elite certainly has proven itself over its years from what I can find in my research.

I owned a Kimber very briefly. No more. If you must have a 10mm 1911 Dan Wesson. Give a me a Glock.

Long time lurker, first time posting.

I just recently purchased a Dan Wesson Bruin in 45ACP...love it so much that I now have a Bruin in 10mm on order. This is what I will be using this fall for deer season in Michigan. Guess it's time to sell the Coonan because it won't be getting used.

For me, I would go with the Glock 20. Though, the 1911 10mm holds some allure since I also have a soft spot for almost any 1911. I have given this question some thought and here is how it broke down for me.

I wanted a utilitarian workhorse 10mm. I also wanted something light and simple. It would fill the role as woods packing gun when I did not need the power of a larger caliber, and would be lighter to boot. I opted for a Glock or a 1911.

1911- cons - heavier than Glock, more expensive( but still worth it), need extra mag to meet Glock capacity(therefore more complex). Do you get worried about putting some wear on your guns( I don't mind character)

Pros- great trigger, slim profile for easier packing, 10mm 1911s are just plain cool and I still want one. Since you mentioned concealment, I would say for me a 1911 is easier to conceal since it is more slim. The Glock is one fat handgun. Maybe if I had a better cc holster for it would be about the same.

Glock cons - worse trigger, it's fat.

Pros - light weight, higher capacity in a single package.

For my needs the Glock has the advantage because it's pros have a lot of up side in its desired role. I put a lighter trigger in it and the width is not that big of a deal in open carry. I do have large hands and the Glock fits me well. But I don't know how someone with smaller hands would like it's width. I bought a gen 4 Glock 20 a couple of years ago and could not be more pleased. I have it loaded with 180 gr xtps and it is decently accurate. I do shoot it fast and well in the limited self defense drills I do. I also enjoy shooting at distance with it. 75, 100, 150 yards. I have been working on getting a load worked up for a 200 gr hard cast WFN, but no luck yet.

For me a Glock is a reliable, simple, light, all business gun that gets its done. I can appreciate it for doing a job well.

My thoughts on the 10mm as a cartridge. It is fantastic overall with some caveats. If you have a 10mm you may as well use it. This means hot premium ammunition. If you shoot regular off the shelf 10mm stuff you get .40 SW performance at a higher price in a larger framed gun. I have nothing against .40 SW by the way.

Still haven't fully decided yet. Your breakdown is pretty much in line with my thoughts on all this. I'm still considering the Glock, but I've always been a 1911 guy. And I don't plan on running anything through it except hardcast during hunting season, and they tell me I'm not supposed to run that through a stock Glock barrel. Aftermarket stuff is available of course, but I'm not an aftermarket kind of guy.

Big drawback to me is the price tag for a quality 1911. I'm thinking I may wait another couple months, save some more pennies, and get the 1911. Which one, I'm not sure yet.

According to Buffalo Bore hardcast will not harm a polygonal barrel. I have not tried it myself as I have been using a Lone Wolf barrel when I shoot hardcast.

I have been pleased with my G20 scatching my 10mm itch, but if your heart is partially with something else, save your pennies and get what you really want.

I shot a Glock 21 for 15yrs and never found it comfortable. Not the angle or the shape. They're too coarse for hunting for my tastes. Don't miss them or want another.

I have owned a S&W 610 Revolver in 10mm/40 S&W since the early 1990's. Way back when 10mm ammo got seriously watered down to keep from prematurely damaging Colt Deltas and 1000 series S&W auto's. I have ran 10mm through a chronograph that was slower than the same companies 40 S&W factory ammunition. The Glock will hold up much better to Heavy & Hot hand loads. If I were getting a 10mm to hunt with, and planned to handload it to it's full potential, it would be a Glock.

Will it handle the stout loads as well? Heck, I really like the idea of a revolver in 10mm, but my mind just jumped track and went straight to having a Super Blackhawk done by Jack Huntington in 10mm. So much for conceal carry with that though!

Several 610 Revolvers have been bored deeper to shoot 10mm Magnum rounds. No problem with Full House 10mm at all. The 610 is a Stainless Steel N Frame S&W. Same frame as a 41 or 44 Magnum.
Mine is an early no dash model that I have owned since the early 1990's. The revolver will take a lot more than Full House 10mm has to offer.

I just traded in a Glock 10mm on a new Sig 10mm. I could never warm up to the Glock. Average accuracy at best. The Sig is a whole lot heavier due to the steel frame but its a real joy to shoot. I plan on carrying it a lot.

How does that sig shoot?

I have the Sig 220 hunter.It shoots great feeds all loads I have put in it.It shoots 185 gr hornady xtp with Longshot. Chrono at 1250fps.Very accurate.Feels alot like a 1911.Also shoots a 185 cast load with accurate #5, good for practice.I am very pleased with mine.

My Sig is extremely accurate. Got a ton of the 180 fmj at 1250, and a bunch of the jhp at the same fps. Never had a failure to feed or any other hiccups. I got it for a general ccw pistol. Should do the job.
