Hi All,

I'm looking for a load using Unique or Trail Boss and a 305 gr. Matt's Bullets .452 has check. I'd like it to pop out of a 6.5 barrel at about 1100 fps. I'm thinking 10.6-11.0 grains of Unique (which I have) but al so interested in TB loads as it will fill the case a little better. This will be mostly a whitetail/black bear load in Michigan. Thoughts?

Meant gas check, not "has check" - stupid fat fingers!

Trail Boss gets my gun filthy dirty after only 10 rounds. I use Titegroup for light loads now and it is way cleaner and still very mild recoil. Go to Hodgdon website to see if a published load is shown, and if not call one of their technicians on 800 number and they will give you starting data on grains to use.

Trail Boss is not what you want for 1100 FPS. A case full of it will only get you 900-950FPS, with that bullet choice. Titegroup gives a sharper pressure spike than unique.
Question,,,Why not just shoot some 45 Colt ammo?

Or HS-6

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Hi Cherokee - trying to stay away for the buildup, but if I can't find a decent load, that's what I'll use.

Thanks everyone. I'll give those a try - I have a buddy who has most of those. What does everyone else shoot (454) for whitetail (or similar) at ranges under 100 yds.?

I use a 260 Nosler Partition over a max dose of H110.

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

I used 20.5 grains of 2400 with a 325 cast. It was like a hot 45 Colt.

I also used a 300 grain cast with 10 or 11 grains of unique for a plinking load. I can't recall the exact charge, so work up slowly.

I've found Unique works pretty well for reduced loads in just about any potent handgun. The trouble is oftentimes finding reliable data.
