Looking at getting a 629 or SBH in a 4" configuration. This would be primarily a carry gun for outdoor activities but also deer during north ga deer season. Sub 50 yard shots maximum!

Is 4" enough barrel?

The barrel is enough if you can handle it. Short barreled , powerful revolvers recoil more and are a little more difficult to handle than longer barreled ones.
The shorter sight radius makes it a little more difficult to be as accurate as the longer barrel big boomers.
You should try one before you decide.

Absolutely! As Doc Rogers mentions, the short sight radius is what trips people up, over a longer barreled revolver. That said, there is no inherent accuracy difference going to a shorter barrel (once you get used to the shorter sight radius) from a longer one.

It's plenty. My Mundenized 629MG delivers 2" groups at 50yds with my standard plinking/practice/woods bummin' load. Never chronographed it but out of my 4 5/8" Ruger the 250gr Keith gets to 1300fps, same for the 310gr Oregon Trail, the 330gr Beartooth to 1226fps and the 355gr Beartooth to 1130fps. These bullets don't need a lot of velocity to work.

Good enough for Elmer Keith....

If you are like me you may just shoot better with the shooter tubes than the longer with iron sights...

As stated, 4" is plenty enough to do the job; just make sure it's legal where you hunt.

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

When S&W brought out the 29 four inch 44 magnum, that was pretty much Elmer's every day gun for the rest of his life. Yes, he carried others occasionally but that four inch 29 was his primary weapon.

If you want to eliminate the short sight radius use a red dot.

Since we are on the topic now. What reddot would y'all recommend on a 4" 629?

Yes, the 4" is ideal, time to move it from the top of your list to your holster.

I'm fond of Ultradot red dots. Had one on my 6" 629. Held up great with no problems.

UltraDot or Bushnell TRS-25. I have both and have had them on 45/70's and 12 ga slug guns as well as 44 mag. They both hold up to the recoil. The Ultradot has a lifetime warranty. The Bushnell may be better on your 4" just due to size.
