Yesterday morning, I had some free time before I had to go to work, so I set up my equipment to sight in my Ruger Mark II. After setting my target stand at 25 yards and adjusting my rest to accommodate the Ruger, I fired three rounds and went to check the target.

Well, that was easy.

This morning dawned cool and wet, which made me thankful I decided to wear rubber boots and waterproof pants rather than regular boots and jeans. I quickly made my way to one of my good spots. Within ten minutes I saw a squirrel darting through the leaves to my right. Although it was hard to see anything through the canopy and undergrowth, the leaves allowed me to remain hidden even as I moved to intercept him. I called out to him when he reached a fairly open branch. A 36 grain hollowpoint to the head knocked him right out of the tree.

I saw several more afterwards in the same area, but I couldn't get them to sit still long enough to take a shot. I see a 410/45 Colt barrel for my Encore in my future. At the very least, I know exactly where I need to be next time.

I think that was awesome. I have kicked myself several times for not getting a 28 gauge for an Encore when I had a chance.
Do you use a bark or whistle to call? I have used the hawk shrill or whistle and used a branch with leaves to make it sound like a fight. They are good practice. MMMMM Squirrel and Dumplings.

Reading about you head shooting that squirrel made me think of my youth. Me and my buddies would compete for the most kills on a hunt but you had to shoot it in the head or you couldn't count it. Of course we were using rifles which makes your kill far more interesting. Thanks for the memories and congrats.

Heh, well actually, when they're in a good spot to make a shot, I just yell "Hey squirrel!" just loud enough to get their attention. It typically confuses and stops them long enough for me to make a shot.

Nice shooting. Too bad we do not have a spring squirrel season in Connecticut or Massachusetts. It would provide some fun in the woods.

Just curious. What justification do your fish and game people provide for having a spring season? It would be nice to have one where we are at.

Got another one this morning. Saw plenty more out there, but this one was the only one I connected on.

Thanks!

I think the justification for spring squirrel season is they're between litters right now. The young ones are off on their own, and the adults are preparing to breed again. Don't quote me on that, though.
