I've got a new front-rest build under way (since someone burnt my stand last winter and I lost the one I had) and I'm looking for suggestions on the filler material.

This one is leather, 3" tall, 2" wide and 7" long. It's also probably going to be carried in and out so weight is a consideration; hence, not automatically filling it with sand.

I'm looking at using dried rice or beans but didn't know if something out there was a better or more durable option.

Thanks in advance.

Could you get plastic BBs or pellets or something similar that won't absorb water and swell if it gets wet?

I use clean sand, heavy sand, small poly beads, and corn cob media for a variety of different bags.

Wal Mart or Hobby House or similar store, from the crafts section.I have a friend who works at a place that produces foam labels. He gets me spilled pellets by the 5 gallon bucket.

I use low density injection molding plastic pellets that are leftover or scrap from our molding machine at work. LDPE, TPX, ABS are all good choices. Find a buddy that works in a molding shop and you can probably get them for free.

I have one finished and I used corncob tumbling media. It's a little shorter than I anticipated but that just gives me reason to build another. Which is under way.

l used to shoot Benchrest Rifle in Factory Varmint.. Next to your

gun and ammo your shooting bags were the most lmportant ltem

More stable the better.. lt was illegal to fill your bags with

steel or lead shot. Sand tends to Clump or dimple with those

bumps or valleys being difficult to adjust... Being an industrial

painter l was familiar with as a blast media. Not very expensive

and readily available l had access to mountains of it.. A unsafe

byproduct of sand is silica dust. There is also a substitute for

sand that has NO DUST. lts more expensivebut without the hazards

sand... GLASS BEADS-- Dense like sand without the clumps, bumps,

and dust

I use Air Soft Pellets. Plastic BB's They work well, and are light weight. My front bag on my antique Wichita rest still has sand fill. Sand is good for the Range, Airsoft for packing around.

I used white aquarium sand for the rear sandbag on my handgun bench rest.

I recently received a rear bag from member Cody Weiser, alias TXBRASS. I like the fact that the beads he uses for filler wont collect moisture nor clog up. I am using this bag on my Bog Pod and it really works great for my handguns. The weight of the poly beads is perfect,

Just wanted to say that the service I received from Cody was top notch. I would post pics, but having issues with TinyPic.
