I actually did my longhorn hunt last year without ever firing a shot on paper. Sighted it in shooting at small rocks at the old man's pond with the Beartooth 355gr at 1250fps. Last week I shot the 310gr load consisting of Oregon Trail's WFN with a huge .370" meplat at about 1400fps. Now I'm testing the Grizzly 300gr Punch bullet in their factory offerings, both the long and short version. The longer version is advertised at 1200fps and loaded long for those guns with longer cylinders, like the Redhawk and Super Redhawk. The short version is for everything else and 1100fps. Plus Buffalo Bore's 340gr +P+ load, just because I always wanted to try them. All groups are five shots at 25yds.

310gr Oregon Trail.

300gr Punch (short).

300gr Punch (long) after sight adjustment.

340gr Buffalo Bore.

The Super Redhawk.

Heavy duty hunting loads for a heavy duty hunting sixgun.

The longer version of the 300gr Punch load takes up nearly all of the available space in the cylinder. Even longer than the Buffalo Bore 340gr.

Great groups! How's the recoil with those heavy bullets?

Thanks! I really can't tell much difference between my 310gr handloads and the other three. The BB 340gr is a little heavier but not much. The SRH is one of the most comfortable .44Mag's I've ever shot. Second only to a good Bisley with the right grips. What is limiting my range sessions right now is the tendinitis in my right elbow.

I HAD A SRH IN 44 MAG 30 - 40 YEARS AGO. ALWAYS HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE SCOPE RINGS (SCOPE SLIPPING AND/OR MOUNTS LOOSENING ON THE BARREL) SO I HAD J.D. JONES PUT A T'SOB ON IT. BEING A DIE HARD 45 COLT AFICIONADO MY FLIRTATION WITH THE 44 MAG SRH WAS SHORT LIVED AND I TRADED IT OFF.

MY QUESTION TO YOU GUYS OUT THERE THAT USE SRH's, RE MY SCOPE RING PROBLEMS, WAS IT ME OR THE GUN OR WHAT? DO YOU GUYS HAVE SIMILAR PROBLEMS? WHAT DO YOU DO TO AVOID THEM? ALL THESE YEARS I HAVE KEPT AWAY FROM SRH's AND HUNTER MODEL BLACKHAWKS BECAUSE OF THAT EARLIER EXPERIENCE BUT I HAVE HAD A HANKERING FOR A 9 1/2 INCH SRH IN 480 AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE ARE STILL ISSUES WIRH THE SCOPE MOUNTING SYSTEM.

Nice shooting!!!

45MAN I have a new model SRH .480 that even with some really hot loads has never missed a beat. I changed scopes on it and the scope hadn't even offered to move. Hope that helps.

Hi Rey,

I've never had any issues with the factory set-up. It's held up well in a number of applications. I've also had a couple of Super Redhawks converted to larger calibers (.475 Linebaugh and .500 Linebaugh) and have used the factory rings/mounts and they have held up really well. Perhaps you simply had a lemon!

My experience has been positive but not 100% trouble-free. I've had issues with the rings not staying tight to the frame but can't remember on which gun. I also had issues with the Burris 2-7x sliding through the rings on my .480. The setups I have now though are holding tight. I have a MatchDot in the Leupold extension rings on the .480. No problems with the .44 above whatsoever. Sometimes the rings are a little rough and would benefit from lapping.

Yrs ago, scope slipped on my redhawk. I added friction pads(sticky labels cut to fit) and that fixed it. 240's at max loads.
Super blackhawk bisley hunter.....done before being shot. Havnt put that many rounds thru it in particular yet, but will bet $ it wont slip.

Just curious Craig, where did you get the Leupold extension rings for the Super Redhawk?

Midway. They have 1" and 30mm. The SRH rings are just M77 rings turned backwards.

I LOVE WARNE MAXIMA RINGS, USE THEM ON ALL MY SCOPED 454's WITH T'SOB's, 3 PER SCOPE. WILL HAVE TO LOOK UP THE ONES FOR THE SRH.

I have dozens of Warne QD rings on nearly all my rifles and pistols with Weaver style bases. They are my favorite but I don't particularly care for their Ruger style rings. Too bulky and too many sharp edges.
