WOW! I'm in. How many times can you apply?

Read the rules. A very physical hunt. Old timers like me are out.

That could be pretty interesting. Too bad you couldn't keep the head, but I wouldn't mind just a picture.

Didn't click on the link or read the regs but wanted to pass this on. Anyone applying that's planning to hunt with a handgun might want to make sure that's allowed. Montana has no caliber/fpe/round restrictions for handguns (or rifles) when hunting deer, antelope, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, black bear, mountain lion, elk or moose. That means someone could hunt moose with a snub-nose revolver using 22 shorts. I think they know most people have enough sense to use an appropriate round for the game they are pursuing.

Yet with their limited draw bison licenses, handguns (and muzzleloaders) are not permitted. The regulations state that rifles are limited to centerfire with a bullet of 150gr or larger. So any rifle round with a bullet of that weight, no matter what the velocity is legal, but a (fill in the big bore T-Rex killer round of your choice) isn't? For a state that uses common sense for all other big game this really makes no sense. If I hunted bison I would want to do it with either a handgun or traditional muzzleloader. After reading this I never bothered to apply. Rant over.

The only gun restrictions l see in the article were- No Lead Boolits.

You must be able to hit a paper plate 5 times @ 200 yards..

Plate size is not mentioned.. Dessert? Salad? Dinner? Platter?

Must be able to hike at least 8 miles a day w/60 pound pack @8000ft alt.

That 8000ft will really mess up sea level sight-ins. Having shot

prairie dogs in Wyoming and Montana l have experienced that..

The ''No Lead'' policy is for the California Condor/Buzzard..

Shoot is to be held in Arizona.. l can only assume they will

follow Arizona Game Laws for gun type and caliber..

Personal opinion-- l don't understand what difference how the

hunter makes contact with the animal.. Politics maybe?? Vehicles

are essential for getting the meat/head/hide out. Also said. No Horses

282, I am proud that you thought of me when you saw this. It is a great opportunity.

There are numerous challenges awaiting a volunteer handgunner, however.

Firstly, the chances of being selected will be pure lottery. I suspect there will be no shortage of applicants.

So let's say a man does get drawn, then he has to field a accurate, buffalo worthy gun that runs on unleaded. I don't currently have one.

Then our volunteer has to hit a paper plate at 200 yards. Murphy loves this part. The only time I have gun malfunctions has been in front doubtful guides.

The gun is the easy part; our volunteer has to be ready for 8 mile hikes with a heavy pack at 8,000 ft. I did that before in Idaho for my first exposure to western hunting. The altitude hit me hard.

If this hasn't turned you away yet, get ready for the trickiest problem yet. Our volunteer will be teamed with state biologists and employees who will likely have no knowledge of handgun hunting and will doubt our man's ability to do the job. They will probably have a negative opinion of handguns for hunting and will ask our volunteer to just use a rifle. It is hard to convince people who haven't seen it done with their own eyes.

To summerize, it looks like long odds on a long walk for a long shot to collect one portion of a bison...

Yeah, I am game! Where do I sign up?
