http://www.midwayusa.com/product/1001465...check-box-of-20 Good afternoon all. My youngest daughter is wanting to try her hand at the shortgun this deer season. What is the consensus on the grizzly ammo in the link above for deer hunting? It's a 260wfn cast performance slug, and listed at 950fps. She's using a 4 5/8" barreled Ruger Super Blackhawk. With magnum loads, she flinches and is all over the place, but with these, her groups at 25 are about the size of a cigarette pack. Would this load be enough to responsibly hunt with under 50yd ? I've been working on retraining her to shoot for the shoulder with some of the deer picture targets. She is a successful rifle hunter, but using her 223, she aims for vitals. Thanks in advance for anyone with 44sp experience they're willing to share.

Absolutely this is a good cartridge for the 44 SP. Especially if she can shoot it well. I do know for a fact that the 240 and 250gr both running about 900FPS out of my 4 5/8 Flattop will do the job. This has a large meplat and will punch a big enough hole. The accuracy should be there to 50yds. I believe she will bring home venison.

It looks like a good choice to me. I would expect closer to 850 fps from the 4-5/8" barrel. She will do much better with a round she can shoot well. The reviews are good on this load. It should shoot completely through on a deer broadside. I would coach her to wait for broadside shots only, and hit them tight behind the shoulder for a double lung shot.
I down load the 357 Maximum for the wife's Contender from my Full House Loads. She was hunting with a 180 XTP last year. This year I am thinking about working up a 158 Grain load for her using the Hornady 158 XTP-FP bullets. My Full House 357 Maximum 180 XTP loads are a little under 2000 fps. They are a little much for her to enjoy. As are the Full House 44 Magnums for your daughter.

Deer are easier to kill than what most people think. I would use a decent 44 special load and keep it under 40 yards. Shoot for double lungs and you will kill any deer around. Just my 2 cents

BOOT: THAT LOAD IS COMPARABLE TO THE OLD 45 COLT 40 gr. BLACK POWDER LOAD, AND IT KILLED WAGON LOADS FULL OF GAME. THERE WERE EVEN SOME SETTLERS IN KENYA THAT WOULD HUNT LIONS ON HORSEBACK WITH THEIR COLT 45 SAA's. I KNOW A LOT OF GUYS LIKE THE BEHIND THE SHOULDER DOUBLE LUNG SHOT BUT ME, I PREFER DEAD CENTER OR A LITTLE LOWER ON THE SHOULDERS.

Very similar to the load I use on hogs and deer from some of my specials. Kills them just fine. I load a 255gr WFN right at 1000fps from the big frame guns.

I've taken several deer with the Skeeter Skelton load of 7.5 grs of Unique & the Keith 250 gr bullet in my 44 specials & they have always worked either behind the shoulder or through both shoulders. When you shoot them through both shoulders they just fold up, behind the shoulders is just as fatal but not quite as fast. The distance can dictate where you hold.

My daughter shot her black bear of about 300 lbs with a complete pass thru both shoulders with a 250wfn at 1150 fps like a hot knofe thru butter, she also shot it texas heart style from below to get it to move/fall out of the tree about 100ft up. Penetrated from tail to the neck. So yeah that load will dust a deer in short order!

Thanks all for the input. I'm hoping she will have some success with her 44. Where we'll be hunting, the longest shot is going to be about 40yds, so at least I can be confident in the load.
