I went down to central PA to Straight Pine Elk & deer, Monday and Tuesday, I shot this doe that was wounded the year before, she had a really bad limp due to her hoof being shot off, not a glamorous hunt, I do not like to see wounded deer but, I know it happens, I shot her with my MGM 1" full bull barrel in 357 Maximum at 100 yards on a Encore platform, using a 200 grain Hornady FTX bullet, she"s a trophy to me, thanks for looking, thank you James!

Congrats! Any game taken under fair chase should be considered a trophy!

How did the 200 grain FTX perform on the deer?
If memory serves me, I believe Hornady has the lower end velocity listed at 1800 fps. You should have been under that.
I have thought about this bullet in my 35 BullBerry as a replacement for the discontinued Hornady 180 SSP.

BOB: I KNOW THE 358 180 gr. SSP HAS BEEN IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND BUT DID NOT KNOW IT WOULD BE DISCONTINUED. I REALLY LIKED THAT BULLET IN 357 CASES IN A 10 INCH XL. WHEN I WANTED TO START USING IT IN A 12 INCH CONTENDER 357 MAX IT WAS NO LONGER OBTAINABLE, GUESS THE 180 XTP IS THE 1 TO GO TO NOW FOR SIMILAR APPLICATIONS.

Bob, the bullet comes out of the 15" barrel at 1475 FPS, I have been switching all my 35 Cal. stuff over to the 200 grain FTX, due to the 180 being discontinued.Performance,I have no complaints,I have not recovered a single bullet, exit holes are the size of a quarter, I use the same bullet in my 35 remington.

It sounds like the 200 FTX is performing ok. I may need to get a box and try them out. I stopped by Carters the other day, and noticed that he had a box in stock. I was after a box of 95 grain Hornady V-Max bullets for my 6.5 x 30 JDJ (6.5x30-30 IMP) at the time, and did not pick up the 35's.

I did try the 140 FTX made for the 357 Magnum in my 357 Maximum. My Scout did not like them very well. I could stay on a desert plate at 110 yards, but I was all over it. One bullet hole looked elongated. I am a little afraid overdriving the 140's that badly, they might blow up on deer.

The Quarter size exit hole at under 1500 fps sounds like the 200 grain FTX is starting to expand on deer. This might be a good replacement for the 180 SSP.

I would guess that you had to replace the Seater Stem with one for pointy bullets to seat the 200 FTX? If I remember correctly, I believe I borrowed the seater stem from my 358 Winchester die to seat them in the 357 Maximum case.

Bob
