Today I moved back to 50 yds with the 480 after being pretty much center yesterday at 25 yds. The load was a tick left but elevation was just about spot on for that distance. I was surprised the difference at 50 yds was as much left as I got. The first shot missed & landed in the sand behind the steel, the second hit the top left corner, time for an adjustment of the, new to me Bowen Rough Country Sight. I'm still in the getting use to it stage & it caught me again today. I'm going to like this rugged, good looking sight (much like the Dawg) after I get more familiar with it.
The next 3 shots were on steel, a bit low & left but grouped pretty good with this new load of 13.5 grs of HS6 & the 387 gr Miha HP that is powder coated. All of these new loads are deep seated, something that I haven't tried until yesterday, seems to be working great. I started out using the Elmer Keith reclining position using a piece of leather over my knees to keep from burning my pants. You need to be careful, especially with these bigger calibers, they can burn you in a hurry if that cylinder isn't past your legs!
You'll see in the first photo the first 3 shots from that position are pretty decent from the sitting position. Well, I messed it up because this new sight is a little different with the windage screws & I took it the wrong way. So, it took me 7 shots to get things figured out. I had no spotter & the bullets were hitting the sand so hard I couldn't tell where they were going. Also at the same time I had switched to the Bog Pod & I thought that might be playing into it but found out it didn't. As I looked at the Rough Country closer I could see the screws pulled the sight instead of pushed it! So, sometimes I had been doing it right & sometimes I had been doing it wrong. This time I could see the sight was way to far to one side. I made one guess & planted one right in with the earlier 3 I had shot from the sitting position, wow!
So now I was back to square one but headed the right way at least. I made a couple more "tweaks" & they were in the low left group as well. I was down to 5 rounds so I made one more "tweak" & fired 2 shots, they are the 2 that are almost dead center, I called it a day. It was getting late, the sun was hard right & almost behind the lava rocks, I was happy & the groups were pretty darn good once I figured out north from south on that rear sight. I'm liking it & this load that I hijacked from good friend Swaggart is looking like it's a bit better than my old 4227 load & it must be a bit faster going by the recoil. I'll clock it tomorrow hopefully & move back to 100 yds. Guys, these Bog Pod rests with the PSR mount are really nice! The PSR has been super hard to find but Natchez Shooters Supply has the Bog Pod & the PSR on sale right now for an amazing price. I wouldn't wait, the PSR has been almost impossible to get.
