I have long wondered why folks wanted a SP. They looked too large to enjoy the benefits of a revolver and too small to benefit from the features of a rifle. I love revolvers and I never understood the point of a scope on a pistol.

But then I read about the CVA V2 Scout and the price was so low I thought I would get one for kicks to see what the fuss was about.

I began with a misadventure with handloading as I tried a new brand of dies for the first time and had a number of problems. I bought a scope from a member here and got to the range yesterday.

It was an epiphany.

As handy as a pistol . . .

(almost)

As powerful as a rifle . . .

(almost)

As accurate as a rifle . . .

(truly).

And very, very fun. I was laughing out loud as I shot it.

I got a .243 and was concerned about recoil but this thing handles it nicely. I am very impressed with its design and construction and the trigger is wonderful.

I also now see why folks put a scope on a handgun (emphasis on the word "see").

I only shot it at 25 and 50 yards, to get the scope zeroed. The handloads were the ones I had trouble with but they were accurate at those distances, so I eagerly went to the rifle range for a test at 100 yards. I had given up on the Hornady dies and bought a set of Lee dies and the loading went smoothly with them but I wanted to burn up the other loads first while getting the pistol zeroed for 100. I slowly and carefully set up my gear on the bench at the 100 yard range.

Filled with anticipation at what this rocket launcher would do at 100 I closed the breech on a round and didn't like how it felt closing. I opened it and pulled out the case and it came out with loose powder and no bullet.

Although I had kept the OAL well within the loading manual specs I had jammed a bullet into the lands. I always bring a cleaning rod with me so I retrieved it and learned that you can't rely on a pistol cleaning rod when you have a 14" barrel (duh!) .

My range is a long drive away so that was it for the day. Next time I will bring a rifle cleaning rod and properly loaded cartridges.

Regardless, this SP is a hoot to shoot.

Fun times ahead!!!

It's a pain.......but I take all my tools and range stuff with me every time I go and shoot. When I don't...........it's when I need a particular tool I didn't bring.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it so much. Now you're an SP addict just like the rest of us.

I love Specialty Pistols!!! I'm definitely addicted to power and accuracy and was HOOKED in 1995 when I saw an article written by JD Jones. The article was in the Handguns 95 annual, and it was pertaining to the JDJ group of hunting rounds. For those that like pushing the envelope and innovations, there is NO better platform. When it comes to hunting large game, the Single Shots with their 14, 15, and 16 inch barrels can get the powder burn needed to produce amazing velocities and energies. Some people say that using single shots aren't fair, or they're easy 😂 to master, but I will promise you that those same people have NEVER used one to take a game animal.

I certainly saw the light the first time I took my Encore with MGM barrel out. I had no idea a pistol could be that accurate with me at the controls. I still love my Super BlackHawk Hunter, but I can't shoot it like I can the Encore.

Too late. Got busy on the internet and have a Contender on the way this week, one .22lr barrel and one .222 barrel.

I hunted with a revolver for years and looked upon Contenders with only mild interest. Around 2000 maybe, I traded into a Contender with a .22 LR and 357 Max. Barrel. Not long after, I found this place and barrel envy made me buy a .35 Rem. barrel. I fell in love with the Contender and just bought a 30-30 Super 14 for the upcoming season. Contender barrels multiply like Tribbles.

And the fun continues-Nice snag.
A 222 Remington was my first Contender barrel.

I have 2 CVA's so far, the Optima 50 muzzle loader, and a 357 Magnum rechambered to 357 Maximum. I see either a 223 or 243 in my future. It would be nice if CVA would get a few more chamberings out such as 260, 7-08, and 308 would be a good start.

Now that you have a Contender check out Tony's Stocks for a forend. I would recommend a 12" for the Super 14 length. Have the forward Bipod Stud installed. Tonys forend is the biggest improvement I have made to a Contender.

Oh it is addictive. My wife bought me my first RSBH when I turned 21 in in the 80's. Hunted with it for years and then bought a contender in 7-30 waters. From there multiple barrels, a new G2 frame, and an Encore in 308 with a couple more barrels.

Now I'm starting down the XP trail. Meeting with my gunsmith tonight to start the 300 black out XP. I picked up a old 221 fireball for a couple of hundred bucks. I want something to hunt with in the small bolt face. I'm also on the look out for another XP to buy or build in a 6.5 Creedmore or 6.5-284.

Im a little late to the party but I love my CVA. Just sent it off to Mike Bellm and had it rechambered and ported for 444 Marlin. Took it out and put some factory Hornady Leverevolution I had thru it. After 16 Rounds my best group was about 3 inches at 100 yards. I have to practice more but I am 100% a SP fan!!!
