I been working on loads for my Ruger SRH. The first is 454 Casull 300xtp w/H110 at 1650fps. Very accurate but, kicks like a mule. Second is 45LC 250RNFP Oregon Trails at 1100fps. Not as accurate but, very tame recoil. Is load #2 enough for deer/pig?

A 250gr bullet at 1100 fps is plenty for deer. I'm not familiar with that particular bullet and don't know exactly what that nose profile looks like, but the round nose part makes me wonder if that's a good hunting bullet. A WFN would work and I've also had good results with a 250 xtp.

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

What I was meaning: I don't know how "round nosed" it is or how flat the point is. If it doesn't have a wide meplat, it will not make for a good hunting bullet.

Ok...I just looked up that bullet and I personally wouldn't use it for hunting. I think a semi-wadcutter/Keith style or a WFN would be a better choice if you choose cast.

I agree. A good speer, barnes, or swift run hard is dynamite on nearly everything. The best expandable i know for
Moderate 454 loads is the sierra 300, but i agree i nice 250-300gr wfn run 1000-1300 fps are deadly on deer and is a midly recoiling round. Its a good bet.

THE 250 OTBC RNFP BULLET IS SIMILAR TO THE ORIGINAL COWBOY BULLETS, WHICH ACCOUNTED FOR WAGON LOADS OF MEN AND GAME. SOME OLD TIMERS IN KENYA USED TO HUNT LIONS ON HORSEBACK WITH THEIR COLT SAA 45 COLTS. I HAVE KILLED 4 WT BUCKS AND 1 FALLOW BUCK WITH THOSE BULLETS IN MY OUTDOORSMAN LOADS @ AROUND 1,350 fps. I HAVE ALSO KILLED A MEDIUM AOUDAD WITH THE SAME BULLET BUT IN AN OLD WEST LOAD @ AROUND 900 fps. ALMOST 100% OF MY 45 COLT SHOOTING IS NOW WITH THIS BULLET IN OLD WEST OR OUTDOORSMAN LOADS. THIS SEASON MY GOAL IS TO TAKE A WT BUCK WITH MY RECENT "GUN SHOW" ACQUIRED RUGER BOWEN PERFECTED BISLEY WITH THE OLD WEST LOAD. WFN TYPE BULLETS SHOULD BE A BETTER CHOICE FOR HUNTING BUT SO FAR I HAVE DONE OK WITH THE 250 RNFP.

"ADAPT OR DIE". I USE ALL CAPS, NOT BECAUSE I AM YELLING, BUT BECAUSE IT IS AN OLD HABIT FROM MY ARMY DAYS, PLUS IT IS EASIER TO TYPE AND READ.

Anybody ever try the 270 gr. thunderheads for deer? Have some loaded at 1140fps (45 colt) for my redhawk. Really want to see how they work. Hope to get one with the 45 colt and with my blackhawk 44 special using the keith load.

I agree. RNFP not a good hunting bullet.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Wondering how many grains of H110 you're dropping to get 1650?

My filter is broken.

Back around 1871 US Army wanted handgun ctg capable of shooting

thru a horse @100yards and kill an lndian on the 0ther side. 1873

saw the lntroduction of the Colt Model P in 45Colt. 255gr lead

@900fps. Never killed an lndian hiding behind his horse, l have

popped a few deer with a handgun... Deer aint as tough as lndians

and horses... 45 COLT is just FINE for deer
