I christened the SSK Encore in 458 Win Mag yesterday morning with this doe, she came in silent right in front of me at 26 yards.
This was also the first time I have used a Barnes bullet in any caliber. 300 Grain TSX at 2325fs, impact was low leg but managed to enter the chest cavity where it put a 3 inch hole in and out. She dressed at 115 pounds.

SHOOTING AN ENCORE PISTOL IN 458, YOU ARE DOING YOUR TIME IN HELL HERE ON EARTH, AND GETTING IT OUT OF THE WAY! CONGRATS ON EVEN GOING THERE, AND CONGRATS ON THE KILL.

For the Barnes 300 TSX - I am running 68.0 grains of H4198 CCI-250 for an average velocity of 2325fs.

Last summers load data:
Hornady 300HP - 65.3 grains of IMR4198 CCI-250 = 2403fs
Hornady 350FP - 64.0 grains of N120 CCI-250 = 2340fs - Recoil noticeably stiff.
I have not tried anything heavier than the Hornady 350FP.

This is amazingly accurate for a big bore - here is a simple target from last summer at 100 yards where I was walking in the scope with the Hornady 300HP's.

The fish-gill brake really tames the recoil.

Very impressive! both the #s and the shooting. I never got the Hornady 300gn HP's to shoot worth a darn in my 45-70 encore, but it shoots the Barnes 300gn TTSX quite well.

Those velocity #s make my hands hurt just reading them. I got some of the BB +p loads with the 300gn barns TSX FN loads that clocked out at 2050fps. After half the box I decided that they exceeded my definition of "fun" and their effect on my wallet was a bit harsh.

Is your chamber throat limited with the copper bullets or isn't that an issue in the 458? (is that a factory barrel?)

The Barrel was crafted by SSK Industries 1-14 twist bull barrel. It's 14 inches long with the added fish-gill brake for a total length of 16 inches. Per JD the chamber is per the 458 Win Mag specifications, it is not altered / improved for any extra lead. I seat the 300 TSX to the top ring and apply a moderate crimp.

After getting into my tree-stand while pulling up my pack and gun which was in a padded Encore case, my rope let go and splat on the ground went all. Shot placement was poor, I suspect this fall KO'd my scope settings.
Here a couple of pics of the terminal performance of the Barnes 300 TSX. The entry has the X like pattern cut into the meat, the same is seen across the top of the heart - not pictured as it did not photo well. The Barnes basically put a 2.5 inch hole through and through.

With the 300 grain TSX I'm getting that same speed out of a 26" barreled Marlin Cowboy 45/70. I can't for the life of me imagine touching that off in a Contender/Encore. You're a tougher man than I...
