This story was originally published in the December 2001 SIXGUNNER and is re-published here by members' requests.

Permission was granted by Mr. JD Jones; and Doc Rogers chose this story for me to share with you.

Again, guys, I can not control the size of the print, my computer scans it and I can't change the size. If you zoom it in at 200% it is perfect. Sorry.

Doc, A fantastic safari. I remember reading it when it was first published. Its articles like this that excited me and helped me realize that my own African dream was possible. I also just read about your croc hunt from the August 2013 Sixgunner.

That?s a great write up to an even better hunt. I personally would be happy to go and come back with a really nice kudu. Maybe a couple more just to make it worth the plane ride.

EricS, Save your extra dollars and plan for it. Africa was my dream for 30 years. I finally made it in 2014. It can be done. My total trip for 6 animals and travel, permit fees etc. (without taxidermy) ran me about $6500. With Taxidermy and trophy shipping close to $10k. Worth every penny. 6 animals including Kudu and Wildebeest.

I really enjoyed this article. Kind of surprised Africa was so cold at night. More surprised that Doc got shot. Seems the WV woods might be more dangerous than Africa.

Thanks, guys. Africa can be affordable. This summer it is really affordable. Check out WAde Darby, Crosshairhunting.com. I've used him my last 3 trips. He has a super deal now for first timers in the East Cape with a PH, that is the best guy I've ever hunted with in all my safaris. And...he loves handgunners. His quality and quantity are unbelievable. Many top 10s, nothing worse than 34.
Spinsail, I told Greg he can post the story of my shooting. The scariest day of my life, only slightly above near death from a rhino.

No way I can get it done at 6500. If I go to Africa I?ll have to take the family as a vacation. I haven?t given up.

I miss reading about all of Doc's kills with the 375/284 and his 416 Taylor. From groundhogs to deer to really big stuff, those rounds get the job done with authority!!! The man, the myth, the legend...Doc Rogers

EricS,
When I went in 2014. My plane ticket was $1700. I think gun permits and various fees were $250 or so. The total cost of the 8 day - 5 animal hunt with Kudu was $3500. I added the Wildebeest. If you squeezed real hard and got a cheaper flight you could do it for less. Taxidermy can add up. I did 4 shoulder mounts and a rug. I waited until I was 54 and had the kids through college and the house paid for. Hopefully you can do it someday.
