I had a wonderful hunt this past Saturday while hunting my 100 acre cut-over lease. On this afternoon hunt a lone young buck entered my 2 acre greenfield at 120 yards. I watched the buck for approximately 10 minutes and made the decision that if he came within my self imposed 50 yard range that I would attempt to harvest my first big game with a handgun. I no sooner made this resolution than the buck starting walking directly to my blind. The buck quickly closed the distance and stopped at exactly 50 yards and turned broadside were he began to feed.

I slowly raised my Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 Casull, and placed the Ultradot on the buck's shoulder and pulled the trigger. The revolver "roared" and the buck whirled and buckled with his tail tucked as he staggered back to the far end of the greenfield 120 yards away. I was very excited waiting for him to fall, but he didn't. I quickly got the Ultradot back on the buck and inadvertently snatched the trigger launching a 2nd Barnes bullet at the buck as he stood quartering away. I immediately realized that I had rushed the shot and missed. I carefully took aim again and as the Super Redhawk "barked" for the 3rd time the whitetail immediately dropped to the ground at the 120 yard distance. I ran from the blind to the downed Buck. I observed that the 1st shot landed high in the shoulder and that the 3rd shot landed behind the last rib traveling toward the brisket. The young 4 point had a broken browtine, but thankfully that doesn't affect the savory flavor of venison!

I have harvested upwards of 50 Whitetails with Bows, Flintlocks, Shotguns, and Rifles, but none of those harvests can touch the rewarding experience of taking Big Game with a handgun. I'm officially hooked!!
