I am contemplating getting my 460 S&W 5-inch barrel muzzle-brake X-frame modified for moon clips. The advantage would be being able to use semi-auto 45 and 45 Winchester magnum, or any other semi-auto 45 caliber cartridge so equipped. Besides versatility and end-time cartridge flexibility, one more advantage is assured ejection of all shells at once. TKCustom.com is the business I will use after speaking with them. Any disadvantage to this idea? I would like to know.

Short cases in long chambers are not conducive to accuracy in my experience.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

It would be not long a run for a bullet with the 45 Winchester Magnum. It also is predated as an approach Ruger did with a 45 Colt and 45 ACP capable moon clip set-up. The main use would be extreme need of any ammunition in an economic meltdown apocalypse. It would not be used for any other purpose than that. But speed of loading and speed of unloading would be maximized. And the moon clip loading and unloading could be used with the 460 S&W, 454 Casull and 45 Colt. And now that Smith and Wesson includes two rear adjustable sight packages the ability to use all three with accuracy is attainable.

I also saw that TKCustom.com offers taking standard 454 Casull and 45 Colt Ruger Super Redhawk or Redhawk 45 Colt revolvers w/out the moon clip and set them both up with moonclips for 45 ACP. Any other cartidges that use the semi-auto recessed rim and are also 45 caliber could be used too. Like 45 Winchester Magnum or 460 Rowland. So go and see the site and see if the price is right to help your double-action 45 caliber Ruger revolver become faster loading and unloading and also add cartridge flexiblity.

JMHO. IF/when "end of times" come you'll have a lot more to occupy yourself with than cartridge flexibility. now if you want this, would enjoy playing with it, and can afford to do so without cutting some where else, HAVE AT IT. +1 to s4s4U

Everything before "but" is B.S.

Thanks for the honest opinion. I will probably play with this and start stocking up ammunition because defending myself from rioters that would rather steal than trade or barter to survive demands preparation and flexibiltiy to respond. And finding military ammunition is probably easier to find than sporting arms ammunition when times get tough. JMHO

Perhaps you should consider acquiring another platform for SHTF situation rather than trying to make one gun a jack of all trades. POI differences would negate the possibility of changing from a 460 to 45 acp and hitting where you intend to without a sight adjustment even if the smaller ammo shot decent groups.

I am of limited funds and there probably could be unavailability of ammunition after SHTF time. I will lose nothing of practical accuracy for defensive situations. And the cartridges that I shoot now can still be used in the moon clip equipped gun. The rimmed cartridges still rest on the shoulder of the cylinder. I would just need a reloading device to help load the moon clips for loading multiples, but could still single load rimmed cartridges as always. Might even have a moon clip made as a floater to make sure single loaded cartridges have consistent headspace and ease of single loading with the altered moon clip.
