After using my GP100 to take a whitetail buck in Idaho this year, I was interested in some finer sights without going the scope route. While the stock sights certainly worked at the 25-30 yards I was shooting, I still felt like the sights covered up a fair amount of the vitals, even sighted in for a 6 o'clock hold. I picked up the small Weigand base, shopped around for a while for a reflex sight, and settled on the Burris FastFire 2. Finally got it all mounted up a few weeks ago. It takes a bit of remembering for me to consistently tip the gun forward to pick up the red dot right away but since my usage of the GP100 hunting will be from a rest I think I can manage. Since I had no idea how close the FF2 would be sighted in I grabbed an old box of Remington 158 gr. HP factory loads someone gave me long ago, I think the Kmart sticker said $7 or $8 so they're certainly not new factory fodder at that price for 50 rounds. After shooting a couple and adjusting and shooting a couple and adjusting I got it centered pretty close to where I wanted it. I was using the factory ammo to get it point of aim to then finish sighting it in with my hunting loads. Once I shot the first group for accuracy with the factory loads I was pretty surprised how well the GP100 like them! I should have stopped at 5 shots instead of 6, the last one was the flyer -Eric-

Nice shooting, and fine looking GP. You should easily be able to double your hunting distance with that setup.

That, looks cool! Didn?t know they made a short base. I have the long one mounted on my 6in GP.

That, looks cool! Didn?t know they made a short base. I have the long one mounted on my 6in GP. They recommend a max weight for optics on the short Weigand base, I don't remember off hand what it was, but I know that the old pistol scope I had weighed more than they recommended. I wanted the reflex sight anyway so I didn't mind the weight limitation, was a good trade for small size of the mount. I had originally seen the full length one, it looks pretty dang strong way of mounting to the gun.

I have a Vortec Venom on my 6" GP with the full length Weigand so I can always scope it if I want. So far the red dot works for me.

I have the long base for my GP100 and didn't even know they offered a short base. I have to look into that.
At first I thought I would never get used to acquiring the dot on my FastFire 2 but with use it really does get easy and quick.

I like that a lot! I looked into that base, but it was for my 4" Redhawk. The recoil and, I believe, 3-3.5oz. weight limit pushed me towards the long base requiring drilling and tapping. But, your set up looks ideal for the GP and definitely performs.

Nice shooting, and fine looking GP. You should easily be able to double your hunting distance with that setup. I agree, I need to set down and shoot it at 50 and 100 yards and see how it does. I?m comfortable with 50 yards hunting, and would really only be shooting at 100 yard distances as follow up shots. Having the 3 MOA dot helps it not feel like it?s covering half the animal at distance, which was the problem with the iron sights for me at longer ranges.

But, your set up looks ideal for the GP and definitely performs. The full lug 6 inch barrel GP100 is heavy and doesn?t recoil that bad so I didn?t feel like the mount or the reflex sight itself would be enduring any harsh recoil even with the heaviest of loads. In one of the shorter barrels it may be a different story long term.

i bought dawn a GP-100 and set it up with the same mount, added a burris fast fire 3. she loves it. she gets about the same results at 25 minus the flyer she has taken a large whitetail doe and a 165lb hog with it in the last two months. next is a Minnesota black bear this fall. i dont think you will be disappointed with your ability to make good hits at 100 yards

That looks like a great set up. Perfect deer combo.

That?s my next step to figure out before hunting season picks back up here.

Doc Barranti can build you a holster to fit your needs - whether belt carry or chest carry and you won't be disappointed. His website has some examples of what you need.
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

I just put a Burris FF3 on my SBH for hunting in spots where 50 yards would be average. I have other scoped handguns for longer ranges, but this is my short range hunting handgun.

built a chest holster out of leather for it. seems to ride nice and is fully adjustable for size of person/torso so if she would ever let it out of her grubby little hands someone else could carry it hers works so good i am going to build another just like it for my ruger srh
