I have acquired a SSK Contender barrel in 338 Woodswalker with die set. It did not come with brass, 8.15X46R. Huntington's lists it, but doesn't have any in stock. Does anyone here have some they would be willing to part with?

My second toy is a S-14 Contender barrel in 414 Super Mag. Can I use standard 41 Mag dies to load it? Anyone here have experience with this caliber? Starline lists the brass as in stock, so I think I'm good there.

Thanks!

IF I REMEMBER RIGHT KEN O'NEILL (500WE) USED TO MESS WITH THE 338 WOODSWALKER, IF HE DID HOPEFULLY HE WILL READ THIS TOPIC AND PROVIDE COMMENTS.

"ADAPT OR DIE". I USE ALL CAPS, NOT BECAUSE I AM YELLING, BUT BECAUSE IT IS AN OLD HABIT FROM MY ARMY DAYS, PLUS IT IS EASIER TO TYPE AND READ.

I used .357 mag\.38 special dies for loading the .357 Maximum. The 414 should be the same.

But for the grace of God, there, I go.

If my memory serves me correctly you can make it out of 225 Winchester brass.

Re: .338 Woodswalker / 8.15X46R
You're right, Rey, I do have one and like it. I got my brass from Huntington's. When I bought my brass in 2004 or 2005, that was the only source I found, although there may be others. Ask J.D. Jones, Mech. 8, and he may be able to point you to someone else.
I have 100 rounds loaded and no extra cases. I'm sorry I can't help.

Thanks guys. Since I first posted this thread I have tried various things in an effort to get brass for the 338 Woodswalker. I emailed SSK and JD referred me to Huntington's. I checked their website and it was listed at $38.98 for 20. OUCH! The person I bought the barrel from said he thought that 225 Win brass would work and actually threw in 20 cases to boot. I added 30 of my own cases and set about to make them into 8.15X46R's. Opened them up in stages using my 257 then 7mm JDJ dies and finally the 338 die. So far so good. Cases are too long, so trimmed them to 1.810. So far so good. Cases would chamber easy enough so I went to set up the seating die. Using a Hornady 200gr SP seated to a depth to just touch the lands, the cartridges wouldn't chamber. In fact, they would stop about 1/4 inch short of the extractor with the action open. Neck wall thickness too much. I have a Forster neck turning tool, but no .338 pilot. Ordered one from Midway along with some other stuff, but it's not here yet. Contacted Huntington's only to find out they list the brass, but don't have any in stock. 500WE, do you have any pet loads you would be willing to pass along?

Well, first let me say that I'm no stranger to .225 Win. brass, using it to load .225 Win., .257 and 6.5 JDJ's and the . 30 Merrill. However, I have no idea of the difference in internal capacity of the .225 case reformed to . 338 WW vs the 8.15 X 46 R reformed case. Of course, less capacity means more pressure, requiring lower charges. With that said, these loads have proven safe in my 10" barrel on a pre-G2 frame with a S/N above 195,000 (Easy Open upgrades), using MY scale and MY powder measure, with reformed RWS 8.15 X 46R cases:

Fire form load: 10 gr. Win. 231, Fed. 210, either of the 200 gr. Hornadys: (JD's rec.). I've gone up to 12.3 gr. for ~ 50 yd. plinking with formed brass.

35.5 gr H335, Fed. 210, Hornady 200 gr. Spire Point, or Flat Nose (This one was
discontinued years ago, but you might still find some) ~1850 fps.

31.5 IMR 4198, Fed. 210, 200 gr. Horn Spire Pt. ~ 2,000 fps.

180 Nos. Ball. Tip., 37 gr. H335, Fed 210, ~1950 fps.

All these are accurate in my gun. As the velocity suggests, JD called it a "Woods Walker for a reason; he didn't call it "Long Range Lightning Bolt"

I hope you enjoy your gun!

Thanks Ken for the data. Let me put your mind at ease. I ain't gonna use the 225 Win brass. I have a fair amount of 225 brass for my JDJ barrels, and after consulting the Cartridges of the World 6th edition, found that the 225 Win should work with the exception of case length. Well my previous post pointed out that I was incorrect in my assumption and the cases would require neck turning and trimming to length. Since new 8.15X46R cases weren't available, and I had to wait for my .338 pilot for my neck turning tool, I invested some time in researching the internet for possible solutions. I found several sites that stated people were using 32-40, 38-55, or 30-30 brass to make 8.15X46R brass for their rifles. I again consulted Cartridges of the World and found that 30-30 specs were very similar with the exception of length, rim diameter, and rim thickness. I had a good supply of new 30-30 Winchester brand brass and tried to put the rim of the case into the chamber. Not gonna happen, it's too big. The rim diameter of the 8.15 is listed at .484 and the 30-30 measured .498. I chucked the case in my cordless drill and used a file to trim down the rim to .484 +/- .002. Now the rim fit as far as the diameter was concerned so I ran the case through the 338 Woodswalker size die. Then I trimmed off the excess length and deburred it. Now the moment of truth, will the action close with this case in the chamber? YES!!! The rim thickness was not an issue, but now I needed to make 100 cases. I couldn't even think of filing down the rims on 99 more cases, so I set about to devise a way of machining the rims without having access to a lathe. I kept thinking about what kind of tools I had at my disposal and how I could turn the rims to a consistent size without constantly checking the progress of brass removal. That brings me back to my Forster neck turning tool. It has a cutter. It is designed for machining outer diameters. It uses a pilot to center and hold the case while turning. I found something in my gun related tackle box that could act as a pilot in the primer pocket and slide in the pilot hole of the cutting tool body. Large rifle primers are .210 but my pilot was .202. It would have to do. A number 4 drill bit would be ideal as it is .209, but it would not fit in the hole of the cutting tool. I inserted the pilot/gauge portion of a LEE 30/30 case trimmer into the case to support it when I chucked it into my cordless drill. I put a little case lube in the primer pocket and adjusted the cutter until I would get .484 +/- .002 on a consistent basis. It took about 30 minutes to do 50 cases, and I didn't want to do anymore until I proved this was going to work. Made a dummy cartridge with a Hornady 200gr SP and it dropped right in the chamber and the action closed with no issues. Loaded up 25 cases with 30.0gr H4198, 200gr Horn SP, Win LR primer. Got a chance to shoot them over the weekend and didn't have one single failure. Velocity from my 14 inch barrel was 1980fps, but accuracy was so-so. What an ordeal, but I just finished making the second batch of 50 cases. I think I'm good for a while. Thanks again for the help.

Mech 8, you might want to try Quality Cartridge of Maryland. They did a special order for me on something else. Don't know what they would do for you.
