I have a very nice Ruger Redhawk that I loaded 50 rounds for. A friend told me the rounds were dangerously hot, but I got the data from a source...just can't remember the source. I have a 250 grain Speer deep curl over 26 GRS OF W296 in star line brass with CCI large pistol primers.

Was my friend right or am I safe to go?
Thanks.

First off you are not going to hurt your gun or yourself, most likely. But the one thing that does bother me is that you used just large pistol primers and not magnum primers. In cold weather for hunting you gat better results with Mag primers than standard. That is with most ball powders. The one thing that is in your favor is, you have a little more than 96% capacity of powder in the case. Full cases of H110 or W296 work much better than partial. Partial can and do give you pressure spikes that will cause you problems. Please chronograph this load and look at your velocity deviations (looking for things such as) radical spikes. As long as you do not have any of those your average should be around 25-27K PSI I am going to assume you shoot a 7.5" barrel and you will be getting a little over 1400 FPS

I'm shooting 26 grains of W296/H110 behind a 250 XTP, it's right at 28,000-29,000 psi load. It is a max load for a Blackhawk, but not dangerously hot at all in the proper firearms. My load and your load would destroy a Colt SAA and the clones however, and is double the pressure of the SAAMI standard pressure data for 45 Colt. The load you and I are shooting is a Ruger/T/C ONLY level load.

Choot em!

Hodgdon's data shows a max load of 26.5 grains of H110/296 with a 250 XTP and Win LP primer. I load 26.1 grains in my 45 Colt Ruger Bisley with said WLP primer. Your load is fine. Recoil is stiff but not excessive. I use the Win large pistol primer for all my large pistol primed cases. No worries about standard or magnum primers, it works for them all. Shoot and enjoy.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.
