So since my Contender deal has fell apart I have been looking at buying a frame and having MGM make a custom barrel. If I am going to make it a custom barrel the two cartridges I have been thinking about are 221 Fireball and 223 Wylde.

I have a 14" barrel CVA Scout V2 Pistol rechambered to 444 Marlin so I have medium to big game covered.

I want a G2 frame and a 10" barrel.

Primary use will be FUN Secondary will be Coyote

What say you???

I would do a 6 x 45

If you do a 10 twist or less you can shoot from 55-85 gr bullets.

Think it gives you an bit more gun and much more flexibility.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

223 wylde if you think you would get acceptable accuracy from 223 factory ammo. More Bangs/$$ if you aren't loading your own.

I don't know that a 223 is going to give you much more than a 221 out of a 10"er, other than noise and flash.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

The 221 was designed to be used in a 10 in barreled XP 100 and works very well. It is also aptly named as it produces a pretty impressive fireball. A 10 inch 223 would be a flame thrower for sure. I have a 10 in X. P. and a 14 in Contender.223 and both shoot well. There is a wider selection of bullet weights loaded by the factories for the .223 than for the 221 and ammo is easier to find. If you hand load not a problem. With the 221 stay with recommended loads and standard primers as pressures spike quickly in small high intensity cases.Substituting a mag primer can put you over the edge quickly. The mil.surplus .223 does not shoot well for me in my barrel at all.

I vote for the 221 Fireball. My father in law has one, and it is an absolute riot!

Can you not make it from 223 brass? I saw a guy on youtube who was resizing and cutting 223 down to 221 fireball.

Yes you can make 221 out of 223 brass. But you are going to be doing more work, such as neck turning, and cutting the brass down.
I like the 221 fireball and yes it is a lot of fun. In a 10" barrel you are going to get quite a flash either way, with the exception of some of the newer powders. (look at IMR Endurons)
If you get the Wylde chamber and a 1-9" twist you will have the best all around combo, for the 223.

My factory TC 14" 223 (1-12" twist I think) and Rem 700 1-9" twist tactical rifle (20") both like the Fiocchi 50gn vmax loads and will print them 1 to 1/2 moa. If the Wylde chamber will shoot them, they are a lot of fun for ~$0.40 a shot. They are the reason I don't reload 223.

Sure, the brass is expensive, but I love the 221 Fireball. It takes minuscule amounts of generally available powders and cheap bullets, so it makes for economical practice. Get a faster twist barrel and you can use the really inexpensive 55 grain SP or FMJ bullets meant for reloading for the AR-15. The biggest plus is it's a really pleasant shooting setup.
